Match Report

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate starts his second season in charge at The Riverside under pressure after a below-par campaign last time out.

Boro finished 12th last season, but struggled for any consistency, with their away form of particular concern.

Southgate's side won just twice in the league on their travels and will need to improve on that record to make progress towards the top half of the table and away from potential relegation danger.

The summer additions of Luke Young, Jeremie Aliadiere and Tuncay Sanli have done little to inspire the Boro faithful, with the loss of Mark Viduka to Newcastle United a major blow.

Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Bates are currently sidelined by injuries, but Southgate still sees plenty of reasons to be upbeat.

He told the club's official website: "Not too many people are speaking about us and that suits us. Everyone else is making the headlines and we've been able to get on with our work quite quietly, so hopefully that's to our benefit."

Blackburn's season is already underway, Rovers having progressed into the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup by seeing off FK Vetra in the Intertoto Cup.

Boss Mark Hughes watched on as Benni McCarthy found the net in both games of a 6-0 aggregate triumph and the South African will again be a key figure after his superb first season in England.

He now has added support in attack from former Bayern Munich frontman Roque Santa Cruz, who could prove to be another astute Hughes acquisition.

Apart from the Paraguayan, Hughes' only other major purchase has been Dutch Under-21 star Maceo Rigters, who will add further pace in attack.

Having finished tenth last season, Rovers will be hoping to push further up the table and challenge for an automatic UEFA Cup spot.

Last season Blackburn did the double over Boro, with loan striker Shabani Nonda on target in both games for Rovers.
