Match Report

John Carver's hopes of landing the Leeds United manager's job permanently received a massive boost as he got off to a winning start against Birmingham City.

David Healy twice gave Leeds the advantage, only for Tony Warner's own goal and Nicklas Bendtner to pull Birmingham level.

But when Leeds substitute Steve Stone crossed into the box, Olivier Tebily headed into his own net for the home side's 85th-minute winner.

Carver's decision to restore Healy to the attack was rapidly justified as the Irishman fired Leeds into a sixth minute lead to the delight of the home fans.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce must have cursed his defence for leaving Healy in acres of space when Eddie Lewis sent over a free-kick from the left and the former Preston man shot powerfully to keeper Maik Taylor's left from 14 angled yards.

Carver left midweek scorers Ian Moore and Robbie Blake out, preferring Healy and Geoff Horsfield to lead the attack.

In a frantic start to the match, Birmingham had gone close to opening the scoring a minute before Healy's goal when Gary McSheffrey fired against the angle of post and bar.

Leeds' advantage lasted four minutes before the Blues equalised with a bizarre own goal from Leeds keeper Warner. Medhi Nafti's throughball found Martin Taylor who put all his force behind a shot which thudded back off the near post, hit Warner and cannoned into the net.

Carver had promised that Leeds would play entertaining football and his players carried out the instruction to the letter. They were back in front in the 15th minute when Horsfield was brought down in the penalty box by Marcos Painter who was booked and Healy stepped up to give Maik Taylor no chance from the spot.

An inventive back-heel almost completed Healy's hat-trick and Shaun Derry fired over the Birmingham bar when he should have scored as Leeds continued to belie their lowly league position against a Birmingham side that had begun the day in second place on goal difference.

Dudley Campbell was booked for pushing the ball into the Leeds net with his hand as the game maintained its breathtaking pace and, after Bendtner wasted a clear headed chance on 58 minutes, he went on to make amends with a 74th-minute equaliser.

Escaping Stephen Crainey near the touchline, Bendtner cut into the box and shot into the far bottom corner.

Three minutes earlier Birmingham had Damien Johnson sent off for a bad tackle on substitute Ian Westlake before Leeds went on to snatch their dramatic third and match-winning goal, courtesy of Tebily.
