Match Preview

Blues waiting on Davies news Curtis Davies needs a late fitness test ahead of Birmingham's npower Championship clash with Leeds. The centre-half returned from a month out with a knee injury in Sunday's 2-0 win at Bristol City but picked up a leg knock. Boss Chris Hughton is hopeful Davies will be fit, especially as Pablo Ibanez is unlikely to be rushed back into action. The Spaniard was replaced by Davies at Ashton Gate after suffering concussion during the Europa League win at Club Brugge last Thursday. Midfielder Jordan Mutch is still three to four weeks away from a return from the ankle injury with has kept him out since August. Hughton's side have won their last five matches in all competitions and lie seven points off the automatic promotion places with three games in hand. Leeds will check on Robert Snodgrass. The Scotland winger was a late withdrawal from the squad which travelled to Peterborough on Saturday due to a back problem. Finland midfielder Mika Vayrynen was handed his full league debut at London Road in place of Snodgrass, but he was replaced early in the second half by Lloyd Sam. If Snodgrass is fit, he is likely to be the only change from the side which started the dramatic 3-2 win. Paul Rachubka continues in goal with Andy Lonergan out for six weeks having suffered a fractured finger. Simon Grayson's side head to St Andrew's on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run in the Championship.

Match Report

Blues grateful for rare Zigic strike Nikola Zigic's first goal since February's Carling Cup final handed Birmingham a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds and extended their winning sequence to six games in all competitions. In an encounter between the npower Championship's two most in-form teams a single goal was always likely to settle matters, and so it proved as the 6ft 8in Serbian - troubled by groin and hip injuries since the club's Wembley triumph over Arsenal - fired home after 35 minutes. Blues goalkeeper Boaz Myhill had earlier kept Blues on level terms with an impressive save to keep out Adam Clayton's vicious volley before again coming to the hosts' rescue late on to tip over Ross McCormack's long-range effort. Zigic and substitute Chris Wood brought good saves from Paul Rachubka, otherwise there was little serious threat to the scoreline amid what remained an intriguing and hard-fought clash. Defeat ended fifth-placed Leeds' seven-match unbeaten league record and moved Chris Hughton's side to within a point of them. Wins in their two games would take the Blues up to into second. Referee Chris Foy was taking charge at St Andrew's in what was his first match since coming under fire from Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas for his officiating in QPR's 1-0 Barclays Premier League victory on Sunday. Speaking in the build-up Birmingham boss Hughton said the contest was "as tough a test as we'll have all season" - and it was his side who started on the front foot. However, Leeds enjoyed the first real opening of the encounter after 11 minutes when fit-again Scotland international Robert Snodgrass - United's only change - fired across goal and wide from 15 yards. Blues were indebted to a genuine save of the season contender from Myhill after 24 minutes, the on-loan West Brom goalkeeper somehow palming Clayton's stinging volley over the crossbar. And it was proved all the more crucial shortly after the hour mark as Birmingham took the lead through Zigic. Stephen Carr broke down the right and delivered a cross which was not cleared by the Leeds defence and the ball found its way to the towering marksman who controlled and shot, seeing the ball take a deflection off Paul Connolly before beating Rachubka. And Zigic was denied what would have been a crucial second on the stroke of half-time as Rachubka used his feet to block well. Chris Burke fired narrowly wide for Blues after the restart before Snodgrass drilled over from distance. As the second half wore on it was Leeds who were again forcing the issue as they chased their first point of any kind at St Andrew's since 1988, although Myhill remained largely untested. Having weathered the pressure Birmingham briefly took the game to Leeds, but it was the visitors who soon turned the screw once more as the clash entered the closing stages. Myhill turned over McCormack's strike from distance in the 86th minute before substitute Chris Wood saw a shot of his own parried over the crossbar by Rachubka in injury-time, leaving Birmingham to maintain their unbeaten home record in the league at St Andrew's, where they have still conceded just on goal this term.
