Match Report

Blackburn will be hoping for a repeat of the Carling Cup encounter between the two sides when they take to the field against Birmingham City on Sunday.

Rovers cruised to a 3-0 win in the third round of the competition last month when they only had to beat a weakened Blues.

All 11 players that started against Rovers that night were left out of the team which lost 1-0 to Manchester United on Saturday.

At least two players from the Cup tie will remain out of the side which faces Rovers, as Rowan Vine has left the club on loan while Mikael Forssell is injured.

Vine has moved to QPR for a month, a decision he puts down to a lack of first-team opportunities at Birmingham.

"I've been surplus to requirements at Birmingham and this is a fantastic opportunity for me," he said of the switch.

Forssell's enforced absence will be more of a worry for Bruce, as the Finnish striker had begun to impress before surgery was required on a hernia problem.

Rovers have striker problems of a different nature, with manager Mark Hughes having to deny that he and Benni McCarthy have fallen out.

The South African international has scored only once this season and now has Matt Derbyshire and Roque Santa Cruz ahead of him in the Blackburn team.

Hughes admitted that he has been leaving McCarthy out of the side, but points to his form and fitness as the reasons, and not anything personal.

Hughes explained: "He's struggling with a little bit of form at the moment, he understands that.

"When you're in the side you have to play well to stay in it. When you're out of it you have to keep your levels high so you can make an impact when you get your chance."

Santa Cruz has begun to show why he's been one of the most highly-rated strikers in Europe over the past five years, scoring twice in the last two games, including in the 2-1 win over Sunderland last Saturday.
