Teams prepare for all-Portuguese affair
The final stages of this year's Europa League look like belonging to Portugal and they are guaranteed to have at least one team in the Dublin final as Benfica face Braga in the semi-finals.
While Porto must get past Villarreal to ensure an all-Portuguese affair, their great rivals Benfica are hoping to book their passage as part of an ongoing salvage mission for their season.
Left for dead in the league, 19 points behind Porto, they finally conceded the title on home turf and then suffered the further indignity of a second defeat to their hated rivals in the space of three weeks, exiting the Portuguese Cup.
Benfica clawed back some pride with a 2-1 victory over Pacos Ferreira in the Taca de Portugal final at the weekend, but there is still work to do.
Now they turn their attention to playing a side that sit 14 points - but only one place - behind them in the Liga standings.
"The important thing is to be mentally focused," said defender Maxi Pereira. "Our goal is to reach the final.
"We know it will be difficult because they want the same, but the Europa League is our next target and we want to win it.
"This win restores our confidence. We have won another cup and I believe in the future things will be better for Benfica."
However, they also know things will not be so straightforward on the pitch as they were on Saturday.
Benfica lost their last meeting with Braga - 2-1 away from home in the league - and the pressure of the `favourites' tag could work against them as they face a Braga side who have already knocked the likes of Liverpool and Dynamo Kiev out of this competition.
There is also a little bad blood between the two teams, demonstrated in that testy league meeting in March.
The winner was scored by Mossoro, who took special delight having suffered a broken leg against Benfica a year before - a match in which he claimed he had been targeted due to a previous tunnel brawl.
Braga will be playing with the freedom of an underdog which has bitten the opponent before, while Benfica will have to keep their focus as they pursue one final chance to beat Porto to a trophy this season.
For Braga, Rodriguez, Elderson and Kaka are back from injury and suspension to boost the squad, but Paulo Cesar is suspended while Quim and Vinicius remain in the treatment room.
Benfica remain without Toto Salvio, Nuno Gomes and Ruben Amorim.
Benfica claim narrow lead
Benfica will take a 2-1 advantage into the second leg of their all-Portuguese Europa League semi-final following a deserved victory over Braga at the Estadio da Luz.
The hosts dominated for long periods but victory was only secured by a thumping Oscar Cardozo free-kick after an hour.
Only nine minutes earlier Benfica had finally been rewarded for a dominant first half when Jardel poked them ahead, but in between Braga claimed a valuable away goal when Vandinho glanced in a Hugo Viana set piece.
It could prove an important goal from the veteran Brazilian although he will miss the second leg after picking up a first-half booking.
Benfica will, however, also be without their key playmaker Pablo Aimar after he was cautioned for the foul that led to Vandinho's goal.
The nerves of the first-ever all-Portuguese European semi-final were evident from the kick-off when Braga immediately sold themselves into danger before Paulao cleared with a hacked clearance over his own crossbar.
The visitors would spend the majority of the half living on their wits, although they came close to a second-minute opener when Lima's long-range effort flew just wide past a sprawling Roberto.
Benfica had the ball in the net soon after but Cardozo needed to be offside to be first to the ball after Artur saved from Javi Garcia's header.
The hosts then settled into an attacking routine with Aimar pulling the strings as he picked out Javier Saviola, who stung the palms of Artur, before Cardozo wasted a good chance by chipping over.
Aimar almost caught out Artur with a long-range effort before teeing up Cardozo who, after shrugging off Paulao, sent a low shot against the post.
Benfica were unlucky to only be level at the break but deservedly led on 50 minutes following an eye-catching move.
Maxi Pereira tricked his way past Alan and into the area and while Cardozo headed his floated cross against the post, the rebound fell perfectly for Jardel to poke home.
The lead lasted just three minutes as Braga claimed their valuable away goal.
Hugo Viana whipped in a free-kick and Vandinho, who held his position ahead of the retreating defence, expertly diverted his header past a wrong-footed Roberto.
It was the second impressive goal of the game but both were overshadowed by Cardozo's emphatic free-kick soon after.
Alan was again exposed in defence as he felled Carlos Martins just outside the area to allow Cardozo to size up the free-kick. He went for power and placement to devastating effect as the ball whistled over the wall and past a helpless Artur.
With the lead regained Benfica sat back to negate Braga's counter-attacking threat and, while the visitors briefly threatened through Alan and Lima, the hosts maintained a lead to take to their rivals next week.
