Falkenburg prepared for tricky trip
AZ Alkmaar midfielder Eric Falkenburg is expecting a tougher test against Belarusian champions BATE Borisov than his side faced in their opening Europa League group game against FC Sheriff of Moldova.
Falkenburg and co were 2-1 home victors against Sheriff but they may be in for a tougher examination from BATE, the six-time national champions who are on course for a seventh in the current campaign.
He told De Telegraaf: "I estimate that their level is slightly higher than FC Sheriff's. We will not underestimate them, they have won a number of league titles and played in the Champions League a few years back.
"The best we could hope for is a 1-0 win, we have demonstrated that we have the ability to keep clean sheets."
AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek named a squad of 21 for the match in Minsk, with the players and officials flying out from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
Belgian playmaker Maarten Martens was unavailable for the trip due to an ankle injury, along with Simon Poulsen, but Australia international Brett Holman was fit to travel after being sidelined since August by a calf problem.
Falkenburg admits it will be a flying visit to Belarus, and said: "Just like last time against (Kazakhstan side) FC Aktobe (in the qualifiers) we will only see the road from the airport to the hotel. I'll see Belarus from the window of the bus. On Friday we'll train again in Alkmaar and on Sunday we have a league match against Heracles on the programme. So we are here purely for our match."
BATE will be looking to pick up a first win after claiming a 2-2 draw away to Dynamo Kiev in their first match in Group E and are unbeaten in their last three European encounters.
AZ have not won a European tie away from home for three years, the last coming against Portuguese side Pacos Ferreira in September 2007.
AZ, finalists in this competition in 1981, are in good form having won their last four matches in all competitions while BATE are again the dominant force in Belarusian football and on course to win the 2010 title under coach Viktor Goncharenko.
BATE batter AZ
BATE Borisov moved to the top of Europa League Group E with a handsome 4-1 victory over struggling Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.
With just two wins from nine in the Eredivisie, AZ were looking for a confidence-boosting away win to move into pole position but were instead on the wrong end of a fine attacking performance in Belarus.
Vitaly Rodionov, Artem Kontsevoy, Renan Bressan and Edgar Olekhnovich all scored for BATE, with Kolbeinn Sigthorsson hitting back in the 89th minute.
Kontsevoy gave Alkmaar goalkeeper Sergio Romero some early work to do after just 40 seconds but it was Rodionov who was first on to the scoresheet after five minutes.
Bressan was the provider, finding Rodionov in the box and allowing him to nod home from 12 yards.
Romero denied Igor Shitov in the 15th minute but then blotted his copybook when he hauled down Pavel Nekhaychik to concede a penalty.
Kontsevoy took the spot-kick but Romero was able to make amends with a save.
Romero was by some distance AZ's most active player, called into action again twice more before the half-hour mark and saving from Bressan and Rodionov.
AZ carved something out of nothing in the 39th minute but Mauricio Jonathas headed over wastefully from close range.
Pontus Wernbloom's header then clattered the Borisov crossbar as the Eredivisie side battled hard to get back into the game.
The visitors were pushed onto the back foot once again at the start of the second half, Kontsevoy tucking home Nekhaychik's cross from six yards just two minutes after the restart.
Artem Radkov offered AZ a way back in when he fouled Jonathas at a corner, though once again the striker proved wasteful as Sergey Veremko pushed the resulting penalty to safety.
There was a third penalty in the 77th minute and this time, with Bressan the taker, it was successful.
Edgar Olekhnovich made it 4-0 with a 20-yard screamer nine minutes from time but there was still room for a Sigthorsson consolation in the closing moments.
