Match Report

Garry O'Connor celebrated his Scotland recall by netting the only goal of a low-key friendly in Vienna.

O'Connor went AWOL after the win over France last year but has since made his peace with Alex McLeish.

His second-half strike gave Scotland a morale-booster before next week's trip to the Faros on European Championship duty.

The Scots had an early scare when Allan McGregor did not look convincing dealing with an inswinging corner from Christoph Leitgeb but he managed to scramble it for another corner.

Kris Boyd came close at the other end when he connected with a Gary Naysmith cross but his left-foot shot was just inches wide.

The Rangers striker should have done better when he sent a tame effort at Helge Payer when Barry Ferguson had made a great run into the area.

A mistake by Naysmith gave Mario Haas a chance for Austria but he shot straight at McGregor and the goalkeeper stood up well.

Boyd missed the best chance of the half five minutes from the break when he completely missed his kick in front of goal, after Darren Fletcher had flicked on a Ferguson pass.

Scotland made three changes at half-time with Craig Gordon, Christian Dailly and Paul Hartley all coming on, but it was Austria who threatened first and won a string of corners.

A mistake by Fletcher gave Roland Linz a look at goal but his 25-yard shot caused Gordon no problems.

Another Naysmith error then gave Andreas Ivanschitz an opening but Gordon was again well placed to save the low shot.

But Scotland scored against the run of play when Boyd knocked a Hartley pass into the path of O'Connor and he took his time before finding the net with a left-foot shot.

Shaun Maloney wasted a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards but dragged his shot across the face of goal.

Boyd missed an easier opening midway through the second half when Maloney put him through but he sliced his shot wide.

Austria almost salvaged a draw in the final minute but Markus Katzer was unfortunate to see his header strike the crossbar.
