Northern Ireland ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Austria, also having Damien Johnson sent off in a fiery encounter.
Lawrie Sanchez's side made a bright start, but record goalscorer David Healy squandered a couple of chances, the first being turned away by home keeper Jurgen Macho.
Just past the halfway point of the first period Healy somehow shot wide after being perfectly set up by strike partner James Quinn.
However, just as it looked like the first half would end goalless, Rene Aufhauser gave the home side the lead, firing a shot beyond Maik Taylor, who was making his 50th appearance for the Irish.
Martin Stranzl had an effort ruled out for offside early in the second half, before the game erupted into life 16 minutes from time.
Johnson dived into a late challenge on Emanuel Pogatetz, sparking a mass brawl that also involved coaching staff coming on to the pitch.
When calm was restored, both Johnson and Middlesbrough defender Pogatetz were given their marching orders.
Mike Duff saw a header cleared off the line, before Aufhauser killed the game off at the death by driving home his second goal of the evening.
