England take on Austria in Vienna with coach Steve McClaren deciding to use the friendly to cast an eye over some fringe members of his squad

Match Report

England were comfortable winners over Austria, but coach Steve McClaren looks certain to be without Michael Owen for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia after he suffered a thigh strain in the 1-0 friendly victory in Vienna.

Peter Crouch headed home the only goal of a fairly uninspiring game on the stroke of half-time, but by then Owen had been withdrawn after picking up a thigh strain in the 34th minute.

The injury-plagued Newcastle United striker hobbled over to the bench after pulling up while attempting to fire England ahead and early reports suggest he will be sidelined for around a month with a thigh strain.

That means England will be without their first choice strike pairing of Owen and Wayne Rooney through injury for Wednesday's Wembley date with Croatia.

Regular central defenders Rio Ferdinand and captain John Terry will also be absent through suspension and injury respectively.

England could still make next summer's European Championship finals should Russia slip up against either Israel or Andorra in the coming days and Steve McClaren's side defeat the current Group E leaders.

On the night, England were good value for their win against a side who were happy to soak up pressure and play on the break.

McClaren decided to hand Scott Carson his first international cap in place of under-fire goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Sol Campbell and Joleon Lescott were handed starts at the heart of the defence in the absence of Terry and Ferdinand, while Frank Lampard returned to the centre of midfield alongside captain for the night Steven Gerrard.

David Beckham made his 98th international appearance and caused early danger when goalkeeper Jurgen Macho made a hash of his low cross but Crouch couldn't force the ball home.

The Austria keeper was forced off soon after following an accidental collision with Crouch and was replaced by Alex Manninger.

Manninger's first taste of the action was to tip over Owen's shot after Crouch had back-heeled the ball into his path on the edge of the box.

But ironically that was to prove Owen's last touch as he hobbled off to be replaced by Jermain Defoe.

Manninger then dived bravely at the feet of Joe Cole to smother his close-range shot before Rene Aufhauser blocked Crouch's follow up with the keeper grounded.

However, the keeper was beaten in the 44th minute when Crouch met Beckham's corner from the left with a downward header which bounced up into the top corner of the net over the head of the man on the post.

McClaren made three changes at half-time sending on Wes Brown, Ashley Young and Gareth Barry for Campbell, Cole and Gerrard.

Young looked particularly lively on his international debut and his 59th minute cross to Crouch should have brought the second goal but the Liverpool striker's header was too close to Manninger who clawed the ball away.

McClaren continued to make changes throughout a disjointed second half where England rode periods of pressure from the home side in which they never really threatened Carson's goal.

The visitors then played out time to secure a solid yet unspectacular victory which came at a cost in the loss of their most prolific marksman ahead of a match which could well decide McClaren's future at the helm of the national side.
