Match Report

Jose Mourinho has dismissed speculation linking him with a job as Spurs manager, giving current boss Martin Jol further time to prove he can turn around Tottenham's ailing fortunes.

The former Chelsea manager spoke out against reports that Spurs had offered £5.3million-a-year if he was to stay in London and manage the north London side.

"I think my next step must be another country, it must be another experience, it must be another type of football," he proclaimed.

Jol has also revealed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has given his personal support to the Dutchman.

Jol explained how Levy "phoned me to say the report (on Mourinho) was rubbish and hoped I would be with him next year. He is always good to me, always backing me".

Jol will need more than pleasantries from his boss when his team hosts in-form Aston Villa on Monday evening.

Villa sit eighth in the Premier League, having won three of their last four games - before Wednesday's surprise 1-0 Carling Cup loss to Leicester City - and conceded only four goals all season.

Tottenham remain in the relegation zone despite their 1-1 draw with Bolton last weekend.

They have rarely shown the ability that led them to be amongst the pre-season title favourites.

Only during the 6-1 demolition of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta in the UEFA cup and the 4-0 win over bottom club Derby County have Tottenham impressed.

Winger Wayne Routledge could come immediately into a side which has lacked consistency in attack and defence.

If he can solve some attacking problems then Ledley King could do the same at the back - if a knee injury hadn't already ruled the England international out until October.

Villa have been hit with an injury to Norwegian striker John Carew that will see him out for at least six weeks.

The former Lyon targetman had just scored his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Everton last Sunday when he twisted his knee and was forced off. Scans later revealed knee ligament damage.

With Marlon Harewood making his first appearance back from a knee injury in the same game, Villa appear to have an instant replacement up front.

Defender Curtis Davies made his first appearance for the club in their League Cup defeat by the Foxes but struggled on his first appearance for six months and looks set to be replaced by Martin Laursen.
