Match Report

Aston Villa's outside chances of European qualification could be all but over should they fail to overcome Sunderland at the weekend.

The Midlands club slipped seven points off the pace in the race for fifth spot and the one available UEFA Cup place available via the Premier League after last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth.

Villa are now without a win from their last three outings following successive 1-1 draws with Arsenal and Middlesbrough.

Manager Martin O'Neill has conceded Europe is now a tall order, but the pugnacious Irishman won't give up the fight until it is mathematically impossible.

O'Neill's selection for the visit of the Wearsiders has been complicated by the absence of Olof Mellberg through suspension.

The Sweden defender was already operating as a makeshift right-back prior to his sending-off for two cautions last weekend.

Midfielder Isaiah Osbourne is one possible replacement for Mellberg, but putting a square peg in a round hole in defence only highlights the impressive job O'Neill has done this season with a wafer-thin squad.

Roy Keane has backed his Sunderland side to survive if they reproduce the level of performance shown in last weekend's 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.

The Black Cats remained 17th in the table and right in the thick of the relegation dogfight, but the commitment and enthusiasm on show at the Stadium of Light certainly heartened the demanding manager.

However for all Sunderland's heroics at home, it is on the road where their season could be decided as the Wearsiders have yet to win away from the Stadium of Light during the current campaign.

Twenty-four of their 27 points have come at home, with their away record equal worst in the league with rock-bottom Derby County.

Three defeats and one draw from their last four games have also dampened expectations among supporters with the relegation scrap promising to go right to the wire.

On the injury front, Keane will be without Dickson Etuhu (knee) and Ross Wallace (knee), who both started during a 1-1 draw between the sides back in December.

Kieran Richardson, Michael Chopra and Daryl Murphy could all return to the squad after missing the Chelsea game.
