Heskey and Jenas miss Magpies clash
Aston Villa will be without Emile Heskey and Jermaine Jenas for the home Barclays Premier League game against Newcastle.
Former England striker Heskey looks set to be out for two to three weeks with a pulled hamstring, while on-loan Tottenham midfielder Jenas also misses out this weekend after suffering a thigh injury in training.
Eric Lichaj is expected to be sidelined for three to four months after undergoing a hip operation. Fellow defender Carlos Cuellar is recovering well from a knee problem but lacks match fitness.
Newcastle full-back Davide Santon could be out of action for a month after suffering a cartilage injury which will require minor surgery.
The 20-year-old former Inter Milan defender will miss out on a chance to make his senior debut for the club, so utility man Ryan Taylor is likely to continue in what has been a problem position for manager Alan Pardew since Jose Enrique's summer departure for Liverpool.
Hatem Ben Arfa is back in training after his ankle injury but is unlikely to be risked at the weekend, although he could make the squad for Tuesday night's Carling Cup trip to Nottingham Forest, while Haris Vuckic (broken hand), Mehdi Abeid and Mike Williamson (broken arm) remain on the casualty list.
Pardew has challenged his players to defy the odds to retain their place in the in the Barclays Premier League's top four.
Not since the Bobby Robson era, when the Magpies finished fourth, third and fifth in successive seasons, have the Magpies rubbed shoulders so closely with English football's elite, and their current lofty status has come as a surprise to many.
Indeed, few would expect them to remain on the coat-tails of the Manchester clubs and Chelsea despite their hugely encouraging start to the new campaign.
However, Pardew insists they are there on merit and while he knows there are tougher tests to come, he insists there is no reason why they cannot stay in the upper reaches of the table.
He said with a smile: "I took my phone and got a picture of it [the league table] to make sure it was correct, and I will keep that.
"There's no sense of us getting carried away - I don't think that will ever happen under my management.
"It's about taking that belief into the games. That's where we are and that's where we deserve to be and from now on, that's where we have got to try to stay if we can."
Newcastle are where they are because they have conceded only one league goal in their four games to date, and that has been enough to secure draws with Arsenal and QPR and wins over Sunderland and Fulham.
But they have scored only three times themselves in the process and while the balance has been good enough during the opening weeks of the season, Pardew knows unless something changes, they will have to continue to keep clean sheets if they are to maintain that momentum.
He said: "The discipline in the squad has been the key and our defenders have been really at the top of their game.
"Where we sit right now, there is a huge dependence on them at the moment and we want to just change that, take some pressure off them and get a couple of goals here and there - or maybe three or four."
Bent fails to make Magpies pay
England striker Darren Bent squandered two golden chances as Aston Villa and Newcastle maintained their unbeaten start to the season by sharing the spoils 1-1 at Villa Park.
Leon Best earned Newcastle a deserved point as his third goal of the campaign cancelled out Gabriel Agbonlahor's early opener.
Bent should have punished the Magpies only for his predatory instincts to desert him, and he completed a miserable afternoon by limping out of the action in the closing stages.
Charles N'Zogbia is also still struggling to adapt to life at Villa Park after his summer move from Wigan but Newcastle looked full of confidence with midfielder Cheick Tiote a key figure.
Villa were indebted to a fine display from former Magpies keeper Shay Given and defender James Collins in holding on for a point despite Bent's opportunities.
The first chance fell to the Magpies with Best teeing up Yohan Cabaye 20 yards out and his shot flew only just wide.
Newcastle looked purposeful and Given had to be alert to turn a cross from Gabriel Obertan over the bar.
But after 13 minutes Agbonlahor put Villa in front via their first meaningful attack.
Bannan's left-footed cross picked out the England striker whose initial volley was blocked by Fabricio Coloccini.
But the ball dropped back straight into Agbonlahor's path and he made no mistake from close range.
Bannan's dipping volley from 25 yards out was only just off target, while Steve Taylor blocked a Stiliyan Petrov effort after good play by Fabian Delph.
Bent missed a golden chance to double Villa's lead after 26 minutes. Skipper Petrov manoeuvred his way to the by-line and squared the ball back across the box to the unmarked Bent only for the England player side-footed wide from eight yards out.
Newcastle still looked threatening and Given made a fine save to turn aside Steven Taylor's volley from Cabaye's corner.
Obertan was causing problems down the right flank and another teasing cross picked out Demba Ba whose shot was deflected for a corner.
Agbonlahor came close to striking for the second time a minute after the restart. N'Zogbia played the ball into Agbonlahor's feet and he managed to turn and fire in a low shot which beat the dive of Krul but curled inches wide.
Newcastle deservedly got back on level terms after 57 minutes through Best. The former Coventry striker was unmarked at the far post and his initial effort from Tiote's cross produced a fine save from Given, but Best had the easiest of chances to convert the rebound.
Petrov was booked for dissent, banging his fist into the turf, after bringing down Best.
Bent had another great chance to restore Villa's lead after a mistake by Steven Taylor in trying to deal with substitute Stephen Ireland's centre. Bent, however, failed to make a full contact on his lob over Krul and Steven Taylor was able to make amends for his error by clearing.
Albrighton dragged a shot just wide of the far post, before Given made a superb save to turn aside Cabaye's 87th minute piledriver.
"Will David Moyes be able to turn it around at Ma..."
