Match Report

Sam Allardyce's first competitive home game in charge of Newcastle United is the visit of Aston Villa to St James' Park.

Following last weekend's opening day 3-1 victory over his former club Bolton Wanderers, 'Big Sam' has already been taken to the hearts of the Newcastle footballing public with the result being plenty of optimism around Tyneside.

Allardyce's new-look side - strengthened with the addition of five new faces and the exit of seven more in the summer - roared out of the starting blocks last weekend and never looked like relinquishing a three-goal lead secured inside the opening 30 minutes.

Obafemi Martins caught the eye with a brace in a fledgling partnership with new signing Mark Viduka, and Allardyce's attacking options have been further boosted this week by Michael Owen's successful comeback from a hamstring strain in a reserve match.

Elsewhere, Joey Barton (foot) will have to wait until next month to make his debut following a £5million transfer from Manchester City and will again be joined on the sidelines by Emre (ankle) and long-term absentees Shay Given (groin) and Damien Duff (ankle).

Aston Villa are heading for a goalkeeping crisis after it was confirmed that Stuart Taylor is struggling to be fit enough to feature in Saturday's Premier League clash against Newcastle United because of a calf injury.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is already without the services of Thomas Sorensen as the Denmark international is struggling with a hamstring problem.

If Taylor fails to recover in time, O'Neill could hand a debut to loan signing Scott Carson, who joined from Liverpool on the eve of the new campaign.

Meanwhile, defender Martin Laursen and striker John Carew - who both featured in the opening day 2-1 defeat by Liverpool last weekend - have shaken off minor knocks and look set to retain their places in the starting line-up.

O'Neill though is demanding an improved performance at Newcastle after accusing his players of 'lacking belief' against Liverpool at Villa Park.
