Match Report

Middlesbrough play host to Aston Villa knowing that they need to end an eight-game run without a win to try and ease clear of relegation danger.

Gareth Southgate's Boro side drew 0-0 at Bolton Wanderers last time out, again struggling to score goals that would bring them much-needed victories.

The Teessiders have netted just 12 times in 13 league games this season, with Stewart Downing the leading scorer with three goals.

There is better news for Southgate at the other end of the pitch, with Jonathan Woodgate set to recover from a hamstring problem to be in contention, while Emanuel Pogatetz is also fit to feature.

Striker Mido (groin) and midfielder Julio Arca (knee) are unlikely to feature, but are both close to a return to action.

While Boro continue to struggle, Villa are busy making progress towards the European places, with boss Martin O'Neill quickly making his mark at Villa Park.

Villa are currently eighth in the table and are likely to go shopping in January to bolster their wafer-thin squad, with Peter Crouch linked with a return to the club.

O'Neill also continues to be linked with the England job, but the Irishman insists that that is not an option.

He fumed: "I am committed to Aston Villa. I cannot end speculation. I have had it for years and years and years, no matter what you say.

"I have a big commitment to Aston Villa. It is as simple as that."

O'Neill has the luxury of an empty treatment room at the present time, meaning that his squad is not being pushed to the limits.

Last season's corresponding fixture ended 3-1 to Villa, as the victors hit back from a goal down to secure the points thanks to strikes from Craig Gardner, Luke Moore and Stiliyan Petrov.
