Match Preview

Aston Villa face big-spending Manchester City on Monday night as Martin O'Neill's men aim to cement their place amongst the European qualification places.

England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has rediscovered his fine goalscoring capabilities and after scoring four in his last four games.

Fellow internationals Ashley Young and James Milner are impressing on either flank and they will be looking to show their worth to England boss Fabio Capello ahead of next week's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.

Up until Saturday's disappointing 2-1 reversal at Blackburn Rovers, Villa had won their last six games - four in the Premier League, one against Rapid Vienna in the UEFA Europa League qualifying round and against Cardiff City in the Carling Cup - so confidence should be high.

Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-1 last Monday and they themselves should be looking to consolidate their place in the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Mark Hughes, with his embarrassment of riches in front of him, can now call on fit again Roque Santa Cruz who will be pushing for a start.

The Citizens have made an excellent start to their campaign and sit in fifth place on 15 points.

Their only defeat came in the Manchester derby against fierce rivals United a fortnight ago when they lost out to Michael Owen's last-gasp heatbreaker in the 4-3 epic.

With Carlos Tevez in the goals against his former club last time out, Hughes' strikers are starting to hit form.

The impressive Craig Bellamy will also be delighting Hughes, while Emmanuel Adebayor should be available following his three-match suspension for his antics against his former club Arsenal last month.

Last season the two sides opened their Premier League campaigns at Villa Park and it was the hosts who walked away with the spoils in a 4-2 victory.

John Carew opened the scoring at the start of the second half before Elano equalised from the spot.

Then young Villa star Agbonlahor turned the game on it's head as he hit a nine minute hat-trick.

Vedran Corluka notched in the final moments as Villa started the season in fine style.

Match Report

Richard Dunne scored Aston Villa's only goal against his old club to pave the way to a well earned point at Villa Park.

Star-studded Manchester City, with their host of top quality players, didn't have it all their own way and it wasn't until the 68th minute that fiery Welshman Craig Bellamy notched the equaliser to cancel out Dunne's 16th minute strike.

Gareth Barry had a mixed reception upon his return to Villa Park but he played a leading role in City collecting a point in a hard fought match.

With Emmanuel Adebayor back for the first time since his three match ban City were looking to the former Arsenal striker to spearhead another impressive performance.

Yet it was City who had a scare in only the second minute when Shay Given had to make a desperate block to keep out a clever flick by Gabby Agbonlahor from Ashley Young's corner.

The feature of the early play was the fast pace of the game with City always moving forward in menacing style.

But there was a dramatic development in the 16 minute. James Milner won a corner on the right and from Stephen Warnock's inswinging kick Dunne, who had shrugged off the attention of Barry, headed Villa into the lead with great purpose and personal satisfaction.

The response from City was positive with Carlos Tevez, playing well behind Adebayor, the main danger as he demonstrated with a long range drive which took a deflection only for veteran Brad Friedel to make a comfortable save.

City turned up the heat and it became a major concern for Villa how easy they were penetrated by some snappy moves often including four or five players.

Fortunately for Villa, Dunne was in outstanding form and he was given solid support by James Collins.

But it took another fine Friedel save to keep out a header from Adebayor following an accurately placed corner by Barry.

Surprisingly, City's defence was not as secure as it should have been as highlighted when Dunne narrowly failed to add to his tally from a Milner corner.

Barry, seemingly aided by the introduction of Stephen Ireland, then began to come more into the game setting up several good attacks but Villa were in no mood to surrender their slender lead as they doggedly defended in depth.

Villa, however, could not survive indefinitely and in the 68th minute Welsh international Craig Bellamy collected a pass from Adebayor to rifle his shot past Friedel.
