Live Text Commentary

FT:Man Utd 4-0 A Villa: It was very much the Ronaldo show again today, one goal and three assists for him, as United strolled past Villa at Old Trafford.

90

There will be two minutes of added time here.

89

The stadium is emptying pretty quickly now as fans look to beat the traffic - although a number of hardy souls are staying until the end regardless of the score and the weather.

86

Not that it will affect this game too much but Ryan Giggs has left the field of play with an injury so United are down to ten and are taking no risks with that knock.

85

The hosts look very pleased with their evening's work and are attacking really at will now rather than teaming forward at all times so play has slowed a little.

82

Some of the through balls from the likes of Anderson, Scholes and Giggs have been superb and the latter plays Rooney through again but he is again a yard offside as he goes in on goal.

80
Substitution

Villa are going to make their final change and its Wilfried Bouma who goes off with Isaiah Osbourne replacing him.

78

Rooney is denied a hat-trick by the offside flag as he converts Hargreaves tempting cross - its the right decision he was half a yard off.

76

Despite their comfortable lead in this game Rooney and Tevez are both still hounding about the pitch as if it was the first minute of the match and as such Villa are still getting no time on the ball.

73

All the flicks and tricks are out now from the home side as they attempt to lift the spirits of the fans of both sides who have endured torrential rain throughout the game.

70
Goal

GOAL:Man Utd 4-0 A Villa: (70mins) Another brilliant assist from Ronaldo as he flicks Rooney through to slot it home wonderfully. There are not words to describe it.

69
Substitution

Villa are making a change now as Moustapha Salifou replaces the hard working Marlon Harewood.

68

Yet again United nearly score a contender for goal of the season as Anderson, Giggs and Tevez combine to set up Rooney whose curling effort clips the post.

65

In fairness to Villa they are still having a go and are not afriad to have a shot at goal as Laursen and then Young both go close within seconds.

64

Owen Hargreaves is at right back although he is miles forward now and somehow Tevez has failed to head home his cross from three yards out with an open goal - if it was 0-0 he would not be smiling.

63

Villa are probably upset Ronaldo is still on and they certainly are now as he runs 60 yards, beating five defenders on his way, before feeding Tevez who slices wide.

61
Substitution

A triple change from United now as Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are replaced by Anderson, John O'Shea and Owen Hargreaves.

59
Yellow Card

Nemanja Vidic is booked for tripping Petrov who did superbly to trick his way past the Serbian centre back and Villa have a free kick in a dangerous position.

56

However, Maloney tests Tomasz Kuszczak with a superb effort that the Polish keeper is forced to tip onto the bar - that was close for Villa.

56

Now it is a case of how many United will actually get because there is no way back for Villa now, with United in this form it could be anything.

53
Goal

GOAL:Man Utd 3-0 A Villa: (53mins) Ronaldo backheels it through the defence and Rooney rounds Carson to kill the game off for good. A superb goal and one Rooney certainly enjoyed.

52

It would have been goal of the season! Rooney, Tevez and Scholes combine and the latter reverses to the back post where Ronaldo volleys and but for a brilliant block by Bouma it would have been a sensational goal.

50

And at the other end of Maloney should have got Villa back into it but he has missed a sitter of his own. Carson's long boot beats everyone and Maloney drags it wide with only the keeper to beat.

49

How has Rooney not scored? Brilliant one two between Rooney and Tevez to get him in and the striker touches it out of his feet but drags his shot just wide.

48

Villa have made a good start in this half and if they can grab a goal then it could be all change.

46

Bouma gets away the first shot of the half as he curls it right footed from the edge of the box but Tomasz Kuszczak is behind it and holds on easily.

Second half

The second half is underway at Old Trafford and it will be interesting to see how Villa react.

Half time

HT:Man Utd 2-0 A Villa: Ronaldo has been at his brilliant best so far as United have cruised into a comfortable lead while Villa look a bit low on confidence.

45

There will be two minutes of added time here at Old Trafford.

45

If a United player needs a goal then it is surely Wayne Rooney and he has gone close once or twice so far but this time he gets it all wrong from 30 yards.

43

Things have really slowed down here as we head towards the break with United comfortable with their advantage and Villa not looking too dangerous, Young does hit a shot but its nowhere near the target.

42
Substitution

Shaun Maloney replaces John Carew who gives Martin O'Neill problems as he has picked up a knock and that will be a worry.

38

Villa have been undone by a couple of moments of brilliance from United in this first half and their performance has actually been pretty good, certainly an improvement on last week's dire display against Sunderland.

35

When they turn it on United look really menacing today and Tevez feeds Giggs superbly who could have been in for three had he taken control of the ball.

33
Goal

GOAL:Man Utd 2-0 A Villa: (33mins) Ronaldo turns creator as he puts a cross on a plate for Tevez to nod home and its game over now. He has been struggling a little for goals but that is his 16th of the campaign.

32

Good defending from Gareth Barry as he tracks Giggs and manages to nod back to Carson with the Welshman ready to head home Rooney's cross.

30

The home side look in the comfort zone now as they pass the ball around with ease and they look to be enjoying themselves.

26

Ronaldo is in the mood today, he tries another outrageous flicked through ball to Rooney and Reo-Coker does well to intercept as the striker would have been in.

24

A slight concern for the hosts here as Evra is down with a knee injury - if he has to go that could be costly not only tonight but in midweek to.

22
Yellow Card

Bouma picks up the game's first booking as he scythes down Tevez as United looked to break.

21

The crowd have come alive now and although Villa have looked good so far you do worry that their fragile confidence might see them crumble.

18

That goal is well worth a look on the highlights later for its sheer cheek, but when you are in the form he is in you probably would try it.

15
Goal

GOAL:Man Utd 1-0 A Villa: (15mins) Instinctive genius from Ronaldo as the ball drops in the area and he backheels it impudently in. The goalscoring continues for Ronaldo, that's 35 for the season.

15

United are not at their flowing best so far, although there have been odd flashes, and VIlla look dangerous from set-pieces.

12

And from the corner Wes Brown rises and almost notches his second in a week as his header skims the top of the cross bar.

11

Almost sensational from Ronaldo as Carrick plays it across the edge of the area he flicks it up and over the defender before volleying left footed and Carson is down well to save.

9

It has been a bright start from both sides and Villa have not come here today just to try and hold on to a nil-nil and look intent on having a go when they can.

6

What a wonderful strike from Rooney as the ball is cleared from the corner and on the half volley he strikes it from the edge of the box and Reo-Coker does well to deflect it away as it was bending into the corner.

5

Now Agbonlahor drives the ball low across the box and Young hits it but Brown is quickly on him to block the effort.

4

Gabriel Agbonlahor wins Villa a throw near the United byline and he starts on the tight hand side of midfield, where there will be less pressure on him to break his current goal drought.

2

As you would espect United are quicker out of the traps but Scott Carson has not been tested so far.
