Match Preview

Bent close to fitness Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is nearing a return to full fitness ahead of the visit of Fulham on Saturday. Bent made a brief appearance from the bench last weekend in the 3-1 win over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium, but is still short of match sharpness. Manager Paul Lambert is also keeping an eye on the fitness of defender Ciaran Clark, He is back on the training ground following a shoulder injury while on international duty for the Republic of Ireland, and providing he suffers no reaction could feature in the travelling squad. Defender Chris Herd and winger Marc Albrighton (both foot) plus defender Richard Dunne (groin) remain on the casualty list. With more teams being pulled into a potential relegation fight, a win against Fulham this weekend would see Villa sitting just three points below the Cottagers who are currently in 11th position. Lambert insists that despite a run of three wins from four there is no danger of his young side resting on their laurels. "I think they know that themselves," he said. "I don't sense any feeling that they feel the job's done and they know the hard work's still there, but they also know that they're playing really well at the moment. "The more that we can keep winning the more it'll happen and they'll get used to that feeling. If we do get that winning feeling and we're at it then we're a really good side that's for sure. "If you keep that collective thing and that spirit then that's half the battle. It's a team thing. If you look at the most successful teams then everyone's pulling the same way and this isn't any different." Fulham midfielder Eyong Enoh will undergo a late fitness test ahead after injuring his ankle against Newcastle last weekend. Cottagers boss Martin Jol is already without midfielders Steve Sidwell (suspension), Ashkan Dejagah (ankle) and Mahamadou Diarra (knee). Dejagah will undergo ankle ligament surgery next week, joining Diarra on the sidelines for the remainder of the season. Fulham captain Brede Hangeland is determined to end Villa's recent revival - and claim the victory that Jol believes will guarantee their Premier League safety. Villa have climbed out of the bottom three with a run of three wins in four matches but their position is still precarious, just two points clear of the relegation zone. Fulham are in mid-table but Jol is nervous about being dragged back into the scrap over the final seven weeks of the season and called for one more win to ensure their safety. "Every game in this league is tough but Villa are desperate for the points as they're trying to avoid relegation," Hangeland told Fulham's official website, www.fulhamfc.com. "They've come into a bit of form lately so they will be hoping for that to continue - but we want to win as well. "If we can get back to the form we've shown this year then we have to be in with a shout."

Cottagers foil Villa

Aston Villa missed the chance to pull well clear of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone as Fabian Delph's bad day at the office proved costly in a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Paul Lambert's side had been unlucky not to have led at the break but Charles N'Zogbia finally made the breakthrough before the hour mark at Villa Park.

However, Delph's own goal, combined with a glaring miss in the 73rd minute, allowed Fulham to go home with a point and denied Villa the chance to go five points clear of the bottom three.

Villa headed into the match seemingly timing their pull from relegation perfectly, winning three of their past four to leave them two points clear of the drop zone heading into the game, with rivals Sunderland and Wigan not in action.

They were, though, without in-form forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, who was presumably ruled out with injury or illness and replaced by N'Zogbia.

Fulham suffered a blow in the 10th minute when Damien Duff was forced off with a leg injury and replaced by Stanislav Manolev in an otherwise quiet opening period.

Ashley Westwood's 24th-minute corner caused Fulham a moment of anxiety before Christian Benteke side-footed over from towards just outside the six-yard box when he should have added to his overall tally of 19 goals from Andreas Weimann's ball in.

In the 31st minute Benteke and N'Zogbia played a series of one-two passes with each other before the former found his colleague with a delicate cross on the left, which N'Zogbia tried to clip home only for Mark Schwarzer to save impressively.

The Cottagers' creative department were struggling to spark anything of note, though Dimitar Berbatov did force two half-chances.

N'Zogbia saw a left-footed shot straight at Schwarzer parried over and Weimann sent a half-volley wide shortly before half-time as Fulham reached the break grateful to be on an even keel.

Villa kept up the pressure from the restart but they were nearly punished on the counter in the 50th minute when Bryan Ruiz's superb pass found a seemingly offside Berbatov, only for the Bulgarian to bend his low shot onto the outside of the left-hand post.

Villa's pressure finally told in the 55th minute. Matthew Lowton found Weimann in the box and though Brede Hangeland blocked the Austrian's attempt, N'Zogbia had time to shift the ball onto his left foot and bend it into the left-hand corner.

The equaliser came in the 66th minute. Ruiz's corner from the right should have been dealt with comfortably at the near post but Villa midfielder Delph contrived the flick the ball backwards with his head, leaving Brad Guzan rooted and Westwood unable to scramble it away before it crossed the line.

Villa substitute Yacouba Sylla was booked barely a minute after replacing N'Zogbia before Fulham replacement Mladen Petric guided the impressive Ruiz's teasing cross wide when he should have done better.

Villa had a sublime chance in the 73rd minute when Delph wasted the opportunity to atone for the own goal, blasting a loose ball at the back post high and wide with his left foot from Weimann's teasing cross.

Darren Bent entered the fray to rapturous applause in the 76th minute before Benteke smashed another effort off target after setting himself up well with full-time approaching.
