Match Report

Newcastle United play host to Premier League leaders Arsenal on Wednesday evening with Magpies boss Sam Allardyce already coming under pressure despite having been in the job for a matter of months.

United have lost four of their last five league games, leading to talk of Allardyce having just a matter of weeks to save his skin, with Newcastle currently marooned in mid-table.

However, a defiant Allardyce told The Chronicle: "I can't do a job other than by doing it the right way.

"The right way is to try and be successful over a period of time, as quickly as you can. You want it to be sustainable over a period of time and not just a flash in the pan.

"At the moment, there are 52,000 who can pick a better team than me, so that's a distraction you can't let happen.

"Just because you get one or two bad results, it doesn't change the way you work."

Allardyce's cause is not helped by a number of injury problems, with Steven Taylor, Stephen Carr, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Ramage, Damien Duff and Michael Owen all out of action.

While Allardyce is battling to save his job, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has no such worries, with Arsenal on top of the Premier League.

Last time out Wenger's side hit back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory at in-form Aston Villa thanks to goals from Mathieu Flamini and Emmanuel Adebayor.

That fightback prompted Wenger to say: "We were tested, we were 1-0 down and in the second half we were confronted with a very physical game yet we passed the test.

"I think the squad will come out with more belief."

Wenger does have a few injury problems to contend with, with Alex Hleb (Achilles) joining Cesc Fabregas (hamstring), Robin van Persie (knee) and Abou Diaby (back) on the sidelines.

Last season's corresponding fixture ended goalless, while earlier this term Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in a Carling Cup third round tie.
