Match Preview

Vertonghen gearing up for repeat clash Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen is looking forward to renewing old rivalries with Anderlecht in the last 32 of the Europa League. The Amsterdam club will make the trip to Belgium for Wednesday's opening leg at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. The pair are no strangers to each other having met in the group stage of last season's competition. Both progressed to the last 32 then, but Ajax's adventure ended there against Juventus while Anderlecht progressed before being knocked out in the next round by Hamburg. Ajax will be keen to go one step further this year, while there is added impetus for Belgium international Vertonghen to succeed against the team many of his family follow. "Last year it was very special to play against Anderlecht," he said. "So I was delighted with the draw this time around. "It will be a good game and the best opponents for us. "Many friends and relatives are supporters of Anderlecht. Last week we had a family party and it was funny because of everything that was said. They now find it a bit difficult choosing who to support." While Vertonghen is thrilled to be facing Anderlecht, he is not so comfortable coming up against their frontline of Romelu Lukaku and Mbark Boussoufa, who have 20 league goals between them so far. "Lukaku is a very strong and very quick player," said Vertonghen. "We'll have to find a good way of stopping him and Boussoufa. They are the spearheads for Anderlecht." Anderlecht are the team to beat in Belgium at the moment, and retained their three-point lead at the top of the Jupiler League with Saturday's 1-0 victory over Cercle Brugge. They had to rely on a last-minute goal from Boussoufa, however, and midfielder Guillame Gillet knows they will have to do better against their Dutch visitors - if only to keep the home support on side. "We have to admit we didn't play well," he said. "The crowd were dissatisfied with that they saw and I can understand that. "Perhaps we weren't so well rested, but we have to handle that as we have a busy week. "The match with Ajax is another important one on our schedule and I think it will be a different kind of match. "Ajax will try to score a goal here and we will also have home advantage. That should make it more enjoyable for the spectators."
