Lukaku - No Anderlecht crisis
Striker Romelu Lukaku has dismissed talk of a crisis as Anderlecht attempt belatedly to kick-start their Europa League campaign.
The Belgians head into the Group G clash with AEK Athens have lost both of their opening games to lie at the foot of the table.
Indeed, they have lost each of their last three matches - against Europa League rivals Hajduk Split and domestic opponents Standard Liege, who beat them 5-1 at the weekend, and Cercle - to set the alarm bells ringing.
However, 17-year-old frontman Lukaku, the Belgian league's leading scorer last season, is adamant there is no need for concern and reminded the club's detractors that it is only a matter of weeks since their Champions League hopes were dashed by a dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat by Partizan Belgrade in the play-off round.
He told Sportwereld: "Only when Anderlecht are not in the top three in Belgium, then you can speak of a crisis.
"In football, there are those times when you try everything, but hardly anything succeeds.
"If we had beaten Partizan and we had qualified for the Champions League, then we would not now be in this difficult period.
"That defeat against Partizan occasionally still haunts us. If we could replay the match 10 times, then we would win nine times."
A 3-1 home defeat by group leaders Zenit St Petersburg and a 1-0 reverse at Hajduk Split have left Anderlecht with a mountain to climb if they are to progress to the knock-out stage of the competition, and that, coupled with disappointing results at home, has left manager Ariel Jacobs under pressure.
However, Lukaku insists he and his team-mates remain fully behind the man who gave him his big chance.
He said: "The coach always protects the players and the group is 100% behind the coach.
"Ariel Jacobs is the coach who launched me, and I give him the utmost respect. My work with Mr Jacobs is not finished yet.
"I can still learn a lot from him and so it is now our duty to protect the coach. That is only possible with good performances."
AEK, who dumped Dundee United out of the competition in the qualifying rounds, head for Brussels having beaten Hajduk Spilt 1-0 in Athens before succumbing 4-2 in St Petersburg.
Boussoufa inspires Anderlecht
Mbark Boussoufa scored one and set up two more as Anderlecht cruised to a 3-0 victory over AEK Athens.
In a game of few chances, Anderlecht had almost all of them and picked up their first points in Group F thanks to further goals from Romelu Lukaku and Roland Juhasz.
Anderlecht sent an early warning sign when Sacha Kljestan tested Sebastian Saja from long range in the fourth minute, but chances were to be few and far between.
Anderlecht did not have another chance on goal until the 18th minute when Romeulu Lukaku's shot was charged down by Traianos Dellas.
AEK then suffered a blow when Nacho Scocco was stretchered off with an apparent hamstring injury.
The next chance resulted in the opening goal when, in the 31st minute, Boussoufa bundled home the rebound after Saja could only parry Kljestan's shot.
Lukaku and Lucas Biglia had chances to add to the lead before half-time, but both blazed over, as did Ismael Blanco who had AEK's first chance a minute before the break.
Chances were short in supply in the second half as well.
The first went to Lukaku in the 55th minute but his header went over, while Boussoufa saw his shot saved in the 67th minute before Lukaku fired wide.
But they were 2-0 up in the 71st minute as Boussoufa teed up Lukaku to fire home from the edge of the area.
Matias Suarez then sent a shot over the crossbar, but Anderlecht had their third when Juhasz headed home Boussoufa's free-kick in the 75th minute.
AEK had barely been seen as an attacking force and when they were, in the 78th minute, Blanco again fired over.
Anderlecht had chances to add to their lead, but Pablo Chavarria's header made for an easy save for Saja, while Boussoufa could not find the target from 25 yards.
The defeat shows how much work remains ahead for AEK coach Manolo Jimenez, who was taking charge of only his second game, the first having been a far more impressive 4-0 win over Aris at the weekend.
