Match Preview

McGlashan to miss Vale visit Aldershot will again be without winger Jermaine McGlashan for the visit of Port Vale. McGlashan was rested for last weekend's draw at Northampton as he attempts to overcome a bout of shin splints and is likely to be missing again. Manager Dean Holdsworth has an otherwise fully-fit squad available after midfielder John Halls returned from a long-term groin problem. Youngster Jack Randall broke his leg while on loan at Didcot Town recently and is a long-term absentee, striker Damian Spencer is still on loan at Eastbourne and defender Anthony Straker is at Wycombe. Winger Albert Jarrett will again be in the squad after he joined on a month`s loan from Lincoln but striker Reece Connolly has joined Dorchester on loan. Vale will be without the services of midfielder James O`Shea after his month-long loan deal expired. O`Shea has now returned to parent club Birmingham and will play no part at the EBB Stadium, although manager Jim Gannon has hinted at a possible extension. Striker Tom Pope also plays the last match of his loan spell from Rotherham, with Gannon certainly keen to retain his services. Midfielder Gary Roberts serves the second game of his three-match suspension having missed Tuesday`s 3-1 home defeat to Stevenage. Centre-back Gareth Owen continues his ankle recovery and is scheduled to return to action next month. Striker Marc Richards was given 45 minutes against Boro in midweek and may well be in line to start from the off this time round following his recovery from a thigh problem.

Match Report

Richards inspires Vale victory Marc Richards notched his 15th of the season as Port Vale ended a nightmare week on a high with a 2-1 win at Aldershot. The Valiants arrived at the Rec with question marks over the future of boss Jim Gannon following a row with assistant Geoff Horsfield. But those worries were largely forgotten in the 26th minute when defender John McCombe bundled home from a corner. Simon Grand should have levelled on the stroke of half-time, but Stuart Tomlinson produced a remarkable acrobatic save. And the Shots were made to pay for that miss six minutes after the interval when an unmarked Richards headed home Robert Taylor's cross. Anthony Charles missed a 65th-minute penalty to get the home side back into it after Tomlinson fouled Danny Hylton in the box. They did reduce the arrears three minutes later when Aldershot frontman Peter Vincenti coolly slotted past Tomlinson, but they could not fashion an equaliser.
