Match Preview

Ajax coach Martin Jol does not believe his club can take too much comfort from Auxerre's lowly Ligue 1 position ahead of their crucial Champions League clash between the teams at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Jol's team lost their Group G opener 2-0 at Real Madrid before drawing 1-1 with AC Milan, while Auxerre went down 2-0 to Milan and 1-0 to Madrid - meaning the upcoming double header between the sides is vital.

The two teams head into the game in contrasting domestic form, with Ajax second in the Eredivisie and Auxerre 17th in France. But Jol reckons Jean Fernandez's side are much better than their league position suggests.

"It is a good and solid team with a few stars," he said.

"Auxerre has a unique style and performed very well last season.

"They are a well organised team, who got past Zenit St Petersburg [in the play-off] to get through to the Champions League.

"Their low spot in the French league rankings is a poor reflection of the qualities they have."

Full-back Vurnon Anita and midfielder Siem de Jong trained individually as they recover from calf and hamstring problems respectively. The former could feature but the latter will focus on being fit for the weekend game at Excelsior.

Defender Thimothee Atouba (knee) trained with the squad this morning, but the Auxerre game will come too soon for the Cameroonian.

Auxerre have picked up just eight points from their first nine Ligue 1 games and finished the weekend in the bottom four after going down 1-0 at home to Bordeaux on Saturday.

Captain Benoit Pedretti is hoping a different competition might bring about an upturn in fortunes for the French club. He said in L'Equipe: "It's another competition, a different atmosphere... and in this competition, we have nothing to lose. We feel more liberated.

"Everything is possible. If Real Madrid get full points from their next two games against AC Milan and we take four points against Ajax, the second qualifying spot could be decided against Milan at the Abbe-Deschamps."

Pedretti admits his side do not have the squad to compete as they would wish both domestically and in Europe, The 29-year-old added: "Of course we're not quite equipped to perform well in the championship and Champions League. If the issue is to maintain focus in Ligue 1 and limit the damage in Europe, it is possible. We would have liked to be stronger and have more ambitions in both competitions.

"We will try to remain in Ligue 1 and not be ridiculous in the Champions League.

"I do not know if a team playing in the Champions League has gone down the same year to Ligue 2, but hey... we will make the most of the staff we have."

Auxerre centre-back Jean-Pascal Mignot should return after missing the Bordeaux game with a groin problem and striker Dennis Oliech is back after suspension.

However, young playmaker Alain Traore picked up an ankle injury at the weekend and Fernandez will also be without midfielder Steeven Langil and forward Anthony Le Tallec due to ankle problems.

Match Report

Ajax up and running after Auxerre win Demy De Zeeuw and Luis Suarez both hit fine goals as Ajax recorded their first win of Champions League Group G in a game of three red cards against Auxerre in the Amsterdam ArenA. De Zeeuw and Suarez both scored in the first half as Ajax dominated, but following the sending-off of defender Andre Ooijer after the break the visitors pulled a goal back through Valter Birsa but could not find an equaliser. Two dismissals in the final five minutes compounded the visitors` misery - including one for substitute Jean-Pascal Mignot who never made it onto the pitch. The Dutch side had the first chance on goal but when Suarez crossed from the right, De Zeeuw headed over the bar. They went one better in the seventh minute when De Zeeuw unleashed a powerful rising shot from the edge of the area. De Zeeuw and Mounir El Hamdaoui had been involved in the build-up but, after Olivier Sorin had punched out a shot from Rasmus Lindgren, the ball was not cleared and De Zeeuw shot across goal and into the top left corner. Birsa tried his luck with a shot from long range but the ball was deflected wide for a corner as the visitors tried to get back into the game. The corner was cleared but when it was headed back in Roy Contout was penalised for using his arm to fend off Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg before heading the ball into the net. Five minutes before the break El Hamdaoui slid the ball into the channel and Suarez ran on and shot across goal with the outside of his right foot to double the lead. El Hamdaoui could have extended the lead early in the second half but completely missed the ball when Suarez's free-kick found him unmarked. Ajax were reduced to 10 men when Ooijer, who was the last man, pulled back Dennis Oliech on the edge of the area. Birsa made no mistake with a left-foot free-kick which he curled over the Ajax wall to reduce the arrears 10 minutes into the second half. Stekelenburg then did well to gather Oliech's shot but the Auxerre striker was pulled up for offside anyway. Oliech was dismissed with five minutes to go when he was booked for a second time for punching a cross over Stekelenburg and into the Ajax goal to level it at 10 men apiece. Auxerre substitute Mignot was then booked and dismissed as he complained to Portuguese referee Olegario Benquerenca about time-wasting while warming up on the sidelines.
