Match Preview

Minshull to return for historic encounter Lee Minshull could return to the AFC Wimbledon squad for their historic first match in the Football League against Bristol Rovers. The midfielder missed last Friday's Carling Cup play-off defeat against Crawley with a dead leg but has now resumed training. Boss Terry Brown has an otherwise unchanged squad to choose from. Defender Mat Mitchel-King, the summer signing from Crewe, is back in light training after a bout of glandular fever but is a few weeks from making his debut. James Mulley is out with a hamstring injury but fellow midfielder Sammy Moore, a substitute against Crawley, got 90 minutes under his belt in a weekend friendly to build up his fitness after a dislocated knee. Midfielders Max Porter and Jack Midson and striker Charles Ademeno will make their league debuts for the Dons. Bristol Rovers will have just three players unavailable when they begin the new League Two season in front of the television cameras. Gary Sawyer, Stuart Campbell and Ollie Clarke will miss out through injury but new boss Paul Buckle believes his fit players are in a positive frame of mind ahead of Saturday. "We have got a couple of bumps because the training has been at tempo, but the players are fit and well and looking forward to it," Buckle told the club's official website. "We have done very well in pre-season, we are going to touch on a few bits and bobs before we go into the game on Saturday "But we are in a positive frame of mind and we will try to be positive and win the game."

Match Report

Virgo spot on for Rovers Adam Virgo's 85th-minute penalty gave Bristol Rovers a 3-2 win and wrecked AFC Wimbledon's historic first match in the Football League. Early strikes from Scott McGleish and Matt Harrold put the Pirates 2-0 up and in total control after just 20 minutes. The Dons fashioned a spirited response which saw skipper Jamie Stuart pull a goal back after 39 minutes before substitute Charles Ademeno hit an equaliser with 22 minutes remaining. Yet Stuart handled inside his own area in the 85th minute and Virgo did the rest with a perfect spot-kick into the top corner. Rovers led in the 17th minute when McGleish collected a pass from Matthew Gill and swept a fine shot into the corner. McGleish, who joined Rovers on a free transfer in the summer after being released from Leyton Orient, then crossed for Harrold to head home. Yet Stuart headed the Dons back into contention from Samuel Hatton's free-kick and Ademeno then slid home a neat equaliser - before Stuart's indiscretion was ruthlessly punished by Virgo.
