Match Preview

Van Holsbeeck warns Anderlecht to expect tougher AEK test Anderlecht will be keen to strengthen their grip on second place in Europa League Group G when they travel to AEK Athens on Thursday. However, general manager Herman Van Holsbeeck does not expect to see a repeat of the 3-0 scoreline his players produced when the teams met a fortnight ago. Anderlecht claimed their first win in the pool with an impressive display in Brussels against their Greek opponents. That moved the Belgian side into the top two, above AEK and Hajduk Split on goal difference, with the three clubs seemingly fighting it out for the second qualifying spot behind runaway leaders Zenit St Petersburg. Anderlecht would do their chances of progressing to the last 32 a world of good if they can complete the double over AEK in Athens. But Van Holsbeeck has warned the Greeks will put up a much-improved performance on home soil. "The race (for second) is wide open, but we will be taking a huge step in the right direction with a good result against Athens," he told club website, www.rsca.be. "We proved two weeks ago we can handle AEK. The question is whether they are really as weak as we saw then. We'll soon find out on Thursday. "This is a home game for them and I think they will show they can do much better. They also know full well that they, Hajduk and ourselves have a chance of finishing second in the group. "We just have to make sure we don't lose. A point would be good." Defeat to Anderlecht last time out has left AEK bottom of the group. Their preparations for Europe were not helped either by a surprise 1-0 defeat at lowly Panionios in the domestic Super League, which has left them trailing leaders Olympiacos by five points. Coach Manuel Jimenez has demanded his side improve on that performance. "We made too many mistakes," he said. "The defence was too deep, the midfield was completely cut off and far from aggressive. "We made no attempt to attack and were too predictable. "We can not afford to let any opponent control our game. We have to move the ball and put pressure on defenders." Gregory Makos sat out training today because of a virus but has been included in Jimenez's 17-man squad for the visit of Anderlecht. However, Papa Boupa Diop and Nathan Burns are sidelined by injuries.

Match Report

Frustrating draw for duo AEK Athens and Anderlecht played out a frustrating 1-1 draw in Europa League Group G to each pick up a point that does little to improve their chances of reaching the knockout phase. Ismael Blanco's penalty three minutes into the second period put the Greek side in the driving seat but the lead lasted just six minutes before Jan Polak levelled for Anderlecht, who remain in second place. The result leaves both sides on four points, way down on leaders Zenit St Petersburg who booked their place in the last 32 with a 3-2 win over Hajduk Split, who prop up the group. AEK arguably had the best of the few chances created in the opening 45 minutes, the first of which was probably the most presentable of the half. Blanco was presented with a clear-cut opening when the ball fell to him six yards from goal, but the striker failed to keep his cool and blasted wastefully wide. Anderlecht created their first chance on 13 minutes, Mbark Boussoufa's free-kick from the right channel met by the head of Roland Juhasz but his effort flew harmlessly over. Rafik Djebbour had the only other decent chance of the opening half, the AEK frontman's header comfortably gathered by Silvio Proto in the Anderlecht goal. Djebbour fired wide just seconds after the restart as AEK started brightly, and the hosts were soon in front. With 48 minutes on the clock, Juhasz hauled down Djebbour in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Blanco took the spot-kick and went for power over placement as he drilled the ball straight down the middle of the goal. Anderlecht raised their game after falling behind and on 53 minutes Cheikhou Kouyate crossed for Ondrej Mazuch but his effort was straight at Sebastian Saja. But just a minute later the visitors were back on level terms, Jonathan Legear's cross from the right collected by Polak and coolly slotted home into the bottom-left corner. Anderlecht, no doubt buoyed by their 3-0 win over AEK in the first meeting between the two sides a fortnight ago, pushed forward in search of the winner and were unlucky not to get it when Romelu Lukaku unleashed an effort from the edge of the area which rattled the left-hand upright. Kanu and Sacha Kljestan also went close for the Belgian side inside the final 10 minutes but AEK held firm to ensure the race for the second qualification berth remains in the balance.
