Accrington Stanley got off to a dream start at the home of one of the League Two title favourites - Wycombe Wanderers.Paul Mullin's second-half header was enough to condemn Wycombe to an opening day defeat.

It was one which the Chairboys deserved as their side, which included seven debutants, never really got going.

Neither side could really blow off their summer cobwebs in what was a slow first half at a sun-drenched Adams Park.

It was Wycombe that had most of the possession, but Accrington put up a fierce line of defence.

The best chance of the half fell to Wycombe's new summer signing, John Sutton, on 10 minutes.

Strike partner Scott McGleish fired in a cross to Sutton whose half-volley was somehow saved at close range by keeper Kenny Arthur.

Sutton had another good chance moments later from a free-kick on the very edge of the penalty area but he scuffed his effort into the wall.

Wycombe continued to dominate without threatening much, Sutton heading Martin Bullock's corner on to the roof of the net.

A rare Accrington attack ended in Lee McEvilly's angled drive just whistling over the bar. The second half was about as lively as the first until Accrington took a shock lead with what was really their first chance of the game.John Miles floated in a corner to the front post where Mullin headed easily into the postage stamp of the net on 58 minutes.

The goal lifted Stanley's confidence and they could have doubled their lead on 65 minutes when the lively Romauld Boco hit a stinging left-foot shot that Scott Shearer palmed over.

And they could have been two in front on 73 minutes when Jay Harris tapped in, but the linesman ruled the goal out for offside. It didn't matter though as Accrington held on and secured a crucial three points.
