It's 7:45pm on Wednesday, April 6th, the match has kicked off.
John Miles snatched a dramatic late equaliser to earn Macclesfield a vital promotion point at the Kassam Stadium. The Silkmen were well below their best without striker Jon Parkin and created far fewer chances than the home side. But they grabbed a precious draw when Miles hammered home from 20 yards with a low right-footed drive from Danny Whitaker's right-wing cross. However, Oxford should have been out of sight long before then. Centre-back Paul Wanless, who had scored an own goal against Shrewsbury the previous weekend, found the net at the right end this time. He drove the ball past keeper Steve Wilson after winning an aerial challenge inside the box as players tried to connect with Lee Bradbury's free-kick. Striker Tommy Mooney showed great skill in beating Macclesfield's centre-backs with a mazy dribble only for Wilson to stick out an arm to save his low close-range shot. Wilson made a series of fine saves, just as he had done for Macclesfield in their recent goalless draw at Scunthorpe United. In the second half, Oxford again created glorious opportunities on the break as Macclesfield committed men forward in a bid to get back on level terms. Substitute Juan Pablo Raponi went on a brilliant run past three players soon after entering the action only to see his right-footed drive from outside the area saved high above his head by Wilson. The Town keeper then tipped an impudent chip by Raponi against the bar. However, Macclesfield too also had chances and Oxford keeper Chris Tardif pulled off a fine reaction save when the ball ricocheted towards the top corner of his goal off Barry Quinn. He also saved low from Matthew Tipton but Oxford looked to be heading for victory until Miles' point-saver.
