Match Report
David Jones fired Wolves out of the relegation zone and to a historic 1-0 victory as Tottenham's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League suffered a fresh setback. Jones' 27th-minute strike secured Wolves their first ever Premier League double following their 1-0 win at White Hart Lane in December. It was also their first win in seven league games as they moved a point clear of the drop-zone. They were well worth their victory as an out-of-sorts Tottenham continued the poor form that has dogged them since the turn of the year. Harry Redknapp's side have now collected just seven points from their last six games - scoring only three goals in the process. Eidur Gudjohnsen made a low-key debut after his arrival on loan from Monaco and he made way in the second half for Peter Crouch. But even the partnership of Crouch and Jermain Defoe could not unlock the Wolves defence. Tottenham ultimately paid the price for squandering the one clear chance that came their way. They should have broken the deadlock themselves in the 20th minute after a surging move that cut the Wolves defence in half. Defoe's neat flick set Niko Kranjcar clear and he only had Marcus Hahnemann to beat from 12 yards but the American goalkeeper deflected the shot wide. Seconds later Tottenham were given a warning of what was to come when Jones released Kevin Doyle whose drive was blocked by Michael Dawson. They escaped that time but they could not prevent Jones giving Wolves a deserved lead after a move that the former Derby County midfielder started and finished. Having collected the ball some 30 yards from goal, Jones fed Matt Jarvis on the left wing. Jones then surged into the area to meet Jarvis' cross with a neat finish from 12 yards. Jarvis was proving to be a real menace to the Tottenham defence and only a smart save from Heurelho Gomes in the 34th minute prevented him doubling Wolves' advantage. Tottenham did enjoy far more of the possession in the second half but were unable to seriously test Hahnemann, with a 90th-minute shot from Wilson Palacios the closest they got to an equaliser.
