Match Report
Hugo Rodallega bagged the only goal of the game to boost Wigan Athletic's survival hopes and deal a hammer blow to Liverpool's Champions League ambitions. The visitors threatened early on at the DW Stadium as Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres both wasted chances, before Rodallega fired past Pepe Reina ten minutes before the break. Liverpool's Sotirios Kyrgiakos scrambled Marcelo Moreno's goal-bound block off the line in the second half before Torres spurned a glorious chance to level as Wigan hung on for their first victory over the Reds. The hosts began the game just a point clear of the drop zone after going seven games without a win, while the Reds had revived their hopes of finishing in the top four after taking ten points from their past five games. Gerrard fired an early warning shot across the Wigan bows when he smashed a rebound from Javier Mascherano's strike over the bar. Torres should have put Liverpool ahead in the eighth minute when he struck the post after collecting Maxi Rodriguez's header inside the penalty box. But after weathering the storm the Latics began to assert themselves and Charles N'Zogbia lashed a teasing ball across the box, before Rodallega fired a free-kick over and Emiliano Insua was booked for hauling down Frenchman N'Zogbia. In the 35th minute the home side made the most of their dominant position when Rodallega slipped his eighth goal of the season past Reina. The Colombian striker continued to threaten the visiting goal after the break and Reina was called on twice in quick succession to deny him. And it was Wigan who almost doubled their advantage on the hour mark when Moreno blocked Jamie Carragher's header and - with Reina stranded - Kyrgiakos was forced to head off the line. Reina smothered N'Zogbia's 73rd minute strike before Dirk Kuyt headed the ball down to Torres eight yards out, but he blazed his volley wide.
Live Text Commentary
Full time

Victor Moses breaks down the left and fires a shot just over - a pass to Scotland may have been the better option there.

Five minutes to be added on at a nervy DW Stadium.

Rodallega gets a standing ovation ashe is replaced by Jason Scotland.

Babel gives the ball away to Rodallega who blasts a shot wildly over the bar. I think he got a bit over-excited there!

Ryan Babel replaces Dirk Kuyt.

Mohamed Diame comes off for Hendry Thomas

Now Gerrard sees yellow, he may have got the ball but he went in with two feet from behind on McCarthy.

Yellow Card

Torres is booked for a crude, late challenge on Emmerson Boyce, the Spaniard's frustration is growing.

Chance for Liverpool! Emiliano Insua's cross is headed down by Kuyt to Torres whose acrobatic volley goes just wide. Torres holds his head in his hands, he knows that was a chance.

Chance for Wigan! N'Zogbia is played through again, he beats Reina to the ball but it flashes across the area and Moses is unable to tap home at the far post.

Alberto Aquilani replaces Yossi Benayoun.

The hard working Moreno makes way for another new signing Victor Moses.

Wigan break rapidly and Rodallega feeds Moreno, who cuts inside and fires in a shot that Reina easily collects.

Nearly the freakiest goal of the season! Moreno dashes past Reina but Carragher is covering and looks to clear, but instead he thumps the ball off Moreno and it loops goalwards before Kyrgiakos heads over.

Torres looks to play in Kuyt but he overhits it slightly and Chris Kirkland collects.

What did I say?! Lucas jogs off and Glenn Johnson comes on to make his long awaited comeback from injury.

Glenn Johnson is warming up on the touchline for Liverpool, if things don't improve I expect him to be introduced sooner rather than later.

Maxi once again breaks free down the right and tees up Torres, who blasts over from just inside the area, he should have done better there.

Wigan go on the attack straight away and Mascherano has to be at his best to block Rodallega's shot.

Second half

We're underway again at the DW Stadium.

Half time

There's the whistle and it is a deserved half-time lead for Wigan, who have steadily improved throughout the half.

Three minutes to be added on

Insua, who has already been booked, brings down McCarthy in a dangerous area but recieves only a warning from the referee.

Maxi crosses form the right and finds Torres, but bhe scuffs his shot wide.

It's no more than Wigan deserves after dominating the past half hour, Rafa has some thinking to do.

WIGAN 1-0 LIVERPOOL Kuyt gives the ball away to Emmerson Boyce on the right and his cross is met by RODALLEGA five yards out who finishes past Reina.

Yellow Card

Another booking for Liverpool, this time Sotirios Kyrgiakos sees yellow for a late tackle on Paul Scharner. A sign of Liverpool's frustration perhaps?

Yellow Card

Lucas Leiva is booked for a late tackle on Titus Bramble, sloppy challenge from the Brazilian.

Just as I say that...another chance for Liverpool,Yossi Benayoun dinks in from the right and finds Gerrard with a low cross, but the Liverpool skipper can't get his shot on goal.

The game has settled down a bit now, though Wigan should be pleased with their performance so far.

Yellow Card

Emiliano Insua is booked for challenge from behind on N'Zogbia.

Lucas Leiva fouls Hugo Rodallega 25 yards from goal, Rodallega steps up to take the free-kick but puts it well over.

More great skill from N'Zogbia down the right as he beats Emiliano Insua, his low cross however can't find a Wigan player and it's scrambled clear.

Charles N'Zogbia turns in the area and fires in a cross shot that narrowly avoids the outstretched boot of Marcelo Moreno.

Wigan battle their way back into things and force a corner off Sotirios Kyrgiakos, but it is cleared by the Liverpool defence.

Chance for Liverpool! Gerrard's corner is cleared only as far as Fernando Torres, who volleys onto the post from the angle, perhaps should have done better there.

Javier Mascherano's cross from the right isn't properly cleared and Steven Gerrard blasts over from 25 yards. Decent start from Liverpool.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos plays a long ball to Fernando Torres, but the linesman correctly flags the Spaniard offside.

Referee Andre Marriner gets us underway on a newly re-laid pitch at the DW Stadium.

Awaiting Kickoff

Liverpool have Glenn Johnson available but he is onlt fit enouh for a place on the bench, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Emiliano Insua come in for Daniel Agger and Fabio Aurelio.

Awaiting Kickoff

Wigan make two changes from the team that lost to Birmingham last time out, with Emmerson Boyce in for Mario Melchiot and Marcelo Moreno replacing Hendry Thomas.Victor Moses remains a subsitute.
