Match Report
Matt Taylor was guilty of missing chances as Bolton Wanderers remained in the Premier League drop-zone following a goalless draw against Wigan Athletic. The Trotters midfielder twice failed to hit the target with clear-cut opportunities as Owen Coyle's men moved them up to 18th following the draw - just one point from safety. Wigan - who are now seven games without a win - handed a full debut to Bolivia international Marcelo Moreno and they were the brighter side early on, with Charles N'Zogbia testing home keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in the opening minute. Coyle's men - who sat second bottom in the Premier League before the game - hit back with Chung-Yong Lee and Taylor both firing wide from outside the box. But it was former Newcastle winger N'Zogbia who was causing all the problems and he rattled the woodwork in the 21st minute with keeper Jaaskelainen beaten. Despite the Latics' pressure, Bolton could easily have taken the lead five minutes before half-time when Lee's cross almost found the head of striker Johan Elmander, but defender Gary Caldwell made the decisive intervention. Swedish striker Elmander was proving a livewire for Wanderers after the break and Caldwell again was in the right place at the right time to clear the danger. Elmander was involved again soon after as he latched on to Kevin Davies' flick-on and teed up Taylor, but his effort shaved the outside of keeper Chris Kirkland's post. Taylor squandered another chance soon after as he fired into the sidenetting as time started to run out for Bolton. The game became stretched and Wigan - who threw on recent signing Victor Moses up front - could have broken the deadlock with ten minutes remaining, but Hugo Rodallega's speculative overhead kick flew over the bar. And despite a late surge from Bolton, Wigan held firm and it finished goalless at the DW Stadium.
