Match Report
Tottenham Hotspur won their FA Cup dress rehearsal against Portsmouth with consummate ease, easing to a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane. Goals from Pompey old-boys Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar secured a routine victory for Harry Redknapp's men, who continued their quest for Champions League football in ruthless style. Spurs are now five points clear in fourth and have just seven matches left to clinch a place in Europe's premier competition - and a fifth straight victory in the league has given them the best chance they can hope for. Time is running out for bottom club Pompey, but they began with a tenacity that seemed to stun Spurs - Anthony Vanden Borre came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on 18 minutes, but Heurelho Gomes came out on top in their one-on-one battle. Vanden Borre was made to pay for his profligacy as Crouch stooped to nod Gareth Bale's excellent cross past David James on 27 minutes. James was at fault for the opener and could only watch as first Tom Huddlestone smacked the crossbar, before Crouch cracked the post. It wasn't long before Kranjcar got in on the act as the former Pompey midfielder tucked home from close range after the visitors failed to clear Luka Modric's low shot. Avram Grant's men should have reduced their arrears just before half-time, but Michael Brown shot straight at Gomes when it looked easier to score. Pompey boss Grant never looks like the most cheerful of managers and his hangdog expression became even more sinister when Herman Hreidarsson was taken from the field with what looked like a serious ankle injury. He needed oxygen as he left the pitch, with his FA Cup semi-final hopes seemingly dashed. If Portsmouth are to have any chance against Spurs at Wembley, they will need to fight a lot more than they did at White Hart Lane. Richard Hughes flashed a drive wide on 60 minutes, but that was as good as it got. In fairness, they did impose themselves on the hosts in the second half, but the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal was there for all to see. Crouch went close late on but fired wide, but it mattered little as Spurs had this one won in the first half.

Oh dear, Younes Kaboul's lets the ball slip under his foot and Kanu is clear on goal, but he top pokes the ball well wide, much to the amusement of the home crowd.

The biggest cheer of the half is for the scoreboard showing scores from around the grounds, that's how quiet it has been.

Credit to Portsmouth they are showing plenty of spirit and keep plugging away, but just lack quality in the final third and haven't troubled Gomes as yet this half..

Benoit Assou-Ekotto comes on for Niko Kranjcar

Spurs seem content to sit on their lead, always a dangerous thing of course, but consequently the game has slowed right down.

More injury worries this time for Spurs as Michael Dawson hobbles off to be replaced by another former Pompey man Younes Kaboul.

Pompey fins themselves on the edge of the box after some neat play involving Webber, Kanu and Brown, the Nigerian has a shot that Gomes claims at the second attempt with Webber lurking.

Another good move involving Modric and Kranjcar finds Bentley whose cross just evades Eidur Gudjohnsen at the far post.

Pompey change their mind and bring on Danny Webber instead for the stricken Hreidarsson, who departs on a stretcher.

More injury worries for Pompey, Hermann Hreidarsson goes down unchallenged in the box with what looks like a twisted ankle. It doesn't look good and he remains on the turf in obvious pain.

Second half

We are undereway again at White Hart Lane.

Half time

Gareth Bale's wonderful cross from the left is met by CROUCH who stoops and heads the ball low past David James.

Good ball in from Kyle Walker from the right, Hermann Hreidarsson sticks out a leg and fortunately for him the ball goes straight to James, either side of the keeper and that would have been an own-goal

Bentley looks for Bale in the edge of the area from a corner, the Welshman fires in a first-time volley that crashes through a crowd of players and goes for a corner

Great chance for Portsmouth! Anthony Vanden Borre finds himself clean through on goal but Heurelho Gomes does well to rush out and block his shot.

Pompey are holding their own here and Steve Finnan briefly gets in behind the Spurs defence, but Sebastien Bassong does well to clear his cross.

Hughes is back on incidently, it is also worth noting that Pompey have only named six subs, such is their injury worries.

Quiet start at the Lane, though the Spurs fans reserve some loud boos for former Gunner Kanu when he touches the ball.

More injury woes for Pompey as Richard Hughes lands awkwardly after a challenge on David Bentley. He hobbles off for treatment and looks like he will be ok.
