Match Report
Roman Pavlyuchenko sent out a strong message to Harry Redknapp that he wants to stay in the Tottenham side after firing a brace to help his side ease their way into the FA Cup quarter-finals following a 4-0 victory over Bolton. After being held to a 1-1 draw at the Reebok Stadium ten days ago, Harry Redknapp's side were determined to book their place in the last eight of the competition and Pavlyuchenko had extra reason for wanting to put in a strong performance. The Russia striker has failed to secure a first-team place at White Hart Lane and feels the Spurs manager has been taking the mickey out of him. But after scoring two goals at Wigan last Sunday, he was handed a rare chance to start in the Tottenham attack. And the experienced forward more than took his chance by scoring two more goals to take his tally to five in his last three games and help Spurs record a comfortable victory in the fifth-round replay. Bolton's cause was not helped after Jussi Jaaskelainen and Andy O'Brien both scored own goals, but Tottenham fans will not care and will now relish their quarter-final showdown against Fulham on March 6. Despite pushing for fourth place in the Premier League, Redknapp was also keen to see his side progress in the FA Cup and feels they stand a strong chance of winning the competition this season. It could have been a different story for Tottenham if Bolton had put away two golden chances early in the first half. Matt Taylor broke free inside the box on 12 minutes and saw his low drive produce a fine save from Heurelho Gomes diving low to his left. Bolton came even closer to breaking the deadlock on 20 minutes when Sam Ricketts' cross from the right picked out Ricardo Gardner who was completely unmarked inside the box, but flashed his close-range header just wide of the post. Tottenham made them pay for their missed opportunities and it was fans favourite Pavlyuchenko who scored the first goal on 23 minutes. Luka Modric played a pass into the Russia striker who beat Zat Knight to the ball and drilled a low shot past Jaaskelainen into the corner of the net. The home side doubled their lead on 34 minutes and it was a goal that Jaaskelainen will not be rushing to watch a replay of. Tom Huddlestone's ball picked out Wilson Palacios who fired a shot towards goal and Jaaskelainen somehow managed to turn it into his own net. Bolton boss Owen Coyle could not believe what he was seeing and his luck was to get even worse when his side managed to score another own goal on 47 minutes. The ever-impressive Gareth Bale raced away down the left-hand side and his cross was cruelly turned into his own net by Andy O'Brien. Pavlyuchenko stole all the headlines when he netted his second of the game on 88 minutes with a cool finish into the bottom corner. Tottenham fans will now start dreaming about a return visit to Wembley and hope to see their side lift the FA Cup for the first time since 1991.
