Match Report
Nigeria were left to rue their missed chances as a 2-2 draw with South Korea sent the Asian side through to the last 16 for the first time in a World Cup outside their continent. With Greece playing Argentina, who were so impressive against South Korea last week, both sides would have felt as if they were competing for a place in the next round and most of the match was played out in such a fashion. Nigeria, who needed a win along with a Greece defeat, were understandably more aggressive for most of the first half, even if their opening goal was against the early run of play. Full-back Chidi Odiah embarked on a hopeless looking run down the right but was able to walk past Jung-Woo Kim without a challenge and swing over a dangerous cross from near the byline. Right-back Doo-Ri Cha, only just back in the side ahead of Beom-Seok Oh, looked to have it covered but Kalu Uche showed enough desire to get there first and fire home from close range. South Korea were finding themselves in and around the Nigerian penalty area on plenty of occasions without looking like providing a danger to Vincent Enyeama. Instead they had to watch with awe as Uche struck a fierce shot from 30 yards which beat Sung-Ryong but came cannoning back off his left-hand post. Lesson learned, South Korea found their finishing touch less than two minutes later through the unlikely right shin of centre-half Jung-Soo Lee. Ki Sung-Yong put the free-kick into the far post where Jung-Soo stooped to head home before shooting instead, low and hard into the corner. South Korea picked up where they left off in the second period and took the lead four minutes into the half. Chu-Young Park was the scorer but Enyeama took some of the blame for failing to keep out his low, curling effort from a free-kick 20-yards out. Nigeria were gifted the perfect opportunity to get back into the match, and the World Cup, when Ayila Yussuf flew into the penalty box down the left and pulled the ball back to Yakubu who, with the goalkeeper bypassed at the front post, had the whole goal to aim at from six yards out but somehow missed. The Everton striker made amends three minutes later by putting away a penalty won by the energetic Ogbuke Obasi, paving the way for a thrilling final 20 minutes. South Korea had chances as Nigeria poured forward looking for the goal that would send them through, but the best chance came and went with Obafemi Martins who was put through one-on-one with Sung-Ryong Jung only to chip the ball over the keeper but wide of the post. South Korea tightened up towards the end to ensure that it would be them playing Uruguay on Saturday.

NIGERIA 2-2 SOUTH KOREA: South Korea get the draw they needed to go through, leaving Nigeria to rue their numerous missed chances as they go out of the World Cup

The obligatory time-wasting sub is here: Chu-Young off and Dong-Jin Kim on

Three minutes of added time have been awarded as Nigeria pile forwards

Obinna with another effort, this one even more ambitious but probably closer. Struck on the run from 30 yards it beat Sung-Ryong but went wide

Good work from Obinna just outside the box bought him enough space to have a shot but he didn't hit it cleanly and it swerved wide of the post

This defensive turn by South Korea has quietened Nigeria but Martins almost had a chance after a cross from the right somehow got through to him but the striker wasn't ready and couldn't control it

Sung-Yong is replaced by the more defensive minded Jae-Sung Kim

South Korea win a throw in the right corner but again no one will come forward. The match is delayed as a couple of players are down with cramp. It's been one of those games

In a sign of how the match is going South Korea win a free-kick 35 yards out but only three men are forward

Martins almost breaks through again, this time down the left, but he can't quite catch up with the ball over the top

A great run from Martins beat the offside trap and left him through on Sung-Ryong. The Wolfsburg man lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper but just wide of the far post. Big miss

Nigeria may now be aware that, as Argentina are winning, one goal for them would send them through. South Korea are through as it stands

Good save from Enyeama after Chung-Yong tried to curl one around his right hand. It might have been going past the post but he couldn't have been sure

Ji-Sung almost finishes off what would have been an excellent solo effort, turning Afolabi inside the box before shooting into the side netting from a tight angle

South Korea now look the most likely to score as Chu-Young turns Echiejile in the box and shapes to shoot before the defender recovers and gets the tackle in

Shittu avoids an own goal by a matter of inches after a whipped cross from the right was miss-kicked by the Bolton centre-back, who had to watch as it shot just past the near post

Good shout for a penalty by Ji-Sung as this match springs to life, but the ref turns it down

That will be Yakubu's last piece of the action as he is replaced by Victor Obinna

NIGERIA 2-2 SOUTH KOREA: YAKUBU makes amends! Sung-Ryong went early to his left and the Everton forward this time didn't miss the open goal, putting it to the keeper's right

Yellow Card

Nam-il is booked for that challenge

Nigeria have a chance to get back into this now after a mistake from Nam-Il forced him to bring down Obasi from behind in the box

Open goal shocker from Yakubu! Yussuf did good work down the left before pulling the ball back for Yakubu who, with the goalkeeper bypassed at the front post, had the whole goal to aim at from six yards out but somehow missed

A wild shot from Nam-Il introduces the midfielder to the game. It was from at least 30 yards out and cleared the crossbar with ease

Nam-Il Kim becomes South Korea's first substitute, replacing Ki-Hun

South Korea counter-attack with style down the left, crossing for Chu-Young to shoot but he was off-balance and Enyeama parried his bouncing effort away quite comfortably

Another surging run from midfield by Obasi threatened the Korean defence but he went to far with it and was well tackled

Young-Pyo continues his adventures in attack down the left, cutting inside this time and hitting the target with his shot but it was weak and didn't trouble Enyeama

Sun-Ryong deals well with a testing corner, aimed at the far post, and a bouncing cross from the other flank, winning a free-kick on the second occasion

A mistake in the South Korean defence gifted Yakubu with a chance inside the box but again the striker took too long on the ball and the ball was taken from him and kicked out for a corner

Kanu has faded this half and is looking tired so it's no surprise that Obafemi Martins will replace him and try to liven things up. Is that the last we see of Kanu in a Nigerian shirt?

Nigeria are at least trying to play it about now, but can't keep hold of the ball long enough to create any chances, as Ji-Sung was given too much time in the penalty area and almost found Chu-Young who was waiting unmarked

Another free-kick effort from Chu-Young, this time from a more central position but at least 35 yards out so the Monaco star struck it with venom and beat Enyeama but it swerved just past the post

The South Korean players are looking far more energetic and interested than Nigeria's, as the Asian side push forward down the left through Ji-Sung

Nigeria need to step it up now, they've come out looking very sluggish and the goal hasn't yet woken them

Enyeama will be disappointed with that one. It was from just outside the box but near the left corner and the shot was always going wide of the wall to the area which any goalkeeper needs to make his own

NIGERIA 1-2 SOUTH KOREA: CHU-YOUNG gets up, dusts himself off, and curls the free-kick around the wall and into the far corner

Shittu is deemed to have used a little too much muscle when winning the ball off Chu-Young in the air and gives away a free-kick 20 yards out

South Korea give Enyeama an early test with a snap-shot from 25 yards that the keeper gets his body behind

That looks to be the only change as Nigeria win an early free kick on the right wing

Uwa Echiejile comes on for Yobo, who may have been injured

Half time

NIGERIA 1-1 SOUTH KOREA: On balance the 1-1 scoreline is about fair after South Korea finished so strongly after Nigeria had dominated and looked more dangerous for most of the half

When they do find possession it goes straight to Kanu, who is fouled 40-yards out but they won't get to take it

Nigeria seem to have given up on getting the ball for the rest of this half, content to watch Korea play it about without threatening

South Korea are extending their dominance at the end of this half, keeping possession well before hitting a long ball forward which Joseph Yobo was always going to win

Ki-Hun takes the set-piece, 30 yards out to the right of centre, aimed into the far corner of the goal but Enyeama read it well, gets his body behind it and holds on

Yellow Card

Korea are taking the game to Nigeria now, with Jung-Woo winning a free-kick from Ayila Yussuf and getting the Nigerian player booked for it

Nigeria will be ruing their missed chances now after dominating for most of this half only to find themselves level

NIGERIA 1-1 SOUTH KOREA: South Korea are back in this thanks to the centre-half, JUNG-SOO. Sung-Yeung put the free-kick into the far post where Jung-Soo stooped to head home before shooting instead, low and hard into the corner

Yellow Card

Obasi gets booked for a tackle on Young-Pyo who had bombed forward from left-back and put himself in a good position to cross before Obasi brought him down

Excellent play from Kanu, playing now in a creative midfielder role, worked the ball to Uche who struck a fierce shot from 30 yards which beat Sung-Ryong but came cannoning back off his left-hand post

Chu-Young miss-hits the shot which got past the wall but dribbled harmlessly wide of the goal

Ji-Sung wins another free-kick, this time off Dickson Etuhu, 30 yards out and from a better shooting angle

Enyeama struggles again, this time with the free-kick which was struck fiercely across the face of goal, forcing the keeper to parry the ball out

Yellow Card

Trouble for Enyeama, who had tried to shield the ball out of play only for Ji-Sung to knick the ball off him and force the keeper into fouling him

A brilliant pivot on the ball from Obasi bought him the space for a shot from 12 yards but his strike was straight at Sung-Ryong

There is a slight worry with Yakubu and Kanu in attack for Nigeria as both are short on match fitness and have struggled early on here when they've been in good positions

Yakubu found himself in another good position on the edge of the box but again his touch let him down, allowing Yong-Hyung Cho to clear

Another superb interception from Shittu, who has been a colossus since injuring his knee, this time winning the ball with his feet as Korea threatened

For the first time Ji-Sung found some space outside the penalty area and the captain fed Chu-Young in the box but the striker can only shoot straight at Enyeama from a tight angle

Nigeria push forward on the counter-attack, feeding Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi on the right of the penalty area who tries his luck from a tight angle and finds the side netting

Du-Ri gets forward well again and very nearly found Ji-Sung on the edge of the box

There's a disagreement over who should take it but the goalscorer Uche gets the nod and curls it over the wall but well over the crossbar

Nigeria win their first free-kick within shooting distance of Sung-Ryong Jung's goal

Ki-Hun Yeom takes a free-kick down the Korea right wing and puts it in at a good height but Shittu wins the header and puts the ball behind

Instead it's Nigeria who are on the attack as Uche feeds Yakubu on the edge of the penalty area but the Everton man can't beat the two defenders around him and looses the ball

South Korea are heading out of the tournament now and need to get back into this match quickly

At the other end Doo-Ri gets forward and puts in a good low cross but it was too close of Enyeama for Chu-Young to reach and Korea only get a corner

NIGERIA 1-0 SOUTH KOREA: KALU UCHE for Nigeria! Out of nothing really Chidi Odiah walks past Jung-Woo Kim on the right and swings over a dangerous cross which Uche beat Doo-Ri Cha to and fired home from close range

Shittu is limping but he's back on the field, which is good to see as it could have been far worse

Nasty looking injury to Shittu, who fell over under no pressure and looks to have a serious problem with his knee. It could just be twisted or it could be more serious

Sung-Yong Ki got hold of the lose ball after the free-kick, marched forward a few pieces then let rip with a drive from 35 yards which rose well over the bar

A rough tackle from Rabiu Afolabi almost lands him in the book but instead it's just a free-kick for Korea, 30 yards out which doesn't beat the first man

Danny Shittu gets an important head to the ball with Chung-Yong breathing down his neck and space between himself and the goalkeeper

Kanu does well to keep hold of the ball inside the Korean box but he gets crowded out eventually and his overhead kick is more in desperation than anticipation

Chung-Yong looks to have been injured as he slid into the Nigerian keeper and he's been stretchered off

That is indeed where the first South Korea attack goes, albeit with Young-Pyo Lee, but play then switches to the right where Chung-Yong Lee is fed through but Vincent Enyeama rushes out and smothers his shot

The match is underway here and Nigeria are starting without their first choice full-backs, Taye Taiwo and Uwa Echiejile, who are out injured. South Korea could target that area with Ji-Sung Park down the left

Awaiting Kickoff

South Korea could be forgiven for looking for a draw but I doubt they will. Only one change for them, as Cha Doo-ri replaces Oh Beom-seok in defence

Awaiting Kickoff

All that means Nigeria have been almost forgotten about, but if Greece lose then Nigeria only need to win here to finish second. No surprise then that they are looking attacking, with Nwankwo Kanu leading the forward line

Awaiting Kickoff

South Korea have to beat Nigeria here at the Moses Mabhida Stadium by a larger margin than Greece beat Argentina. If though, as expected, Argentina beat Greece then South Korea will only require a draw

Awaiting Kickoff

Group B draws to a close this evening, with Argentina all but through and South Korea favourites to join them
