Match Report
An 89th minute header from big defender Shelton Martis decided an entertaining end of season local derby in Doncaster's favour as they beat Scunthorpe 4-3 at Keepmoat Stadium. Rovers looked to have thrown two points away when sloppy defending allowed Gary Hooper to make it 3-3 six minutes from time. But Martis rose high to send a powerful header crashing into the roof of the net following a corner from Dean Shiels with seconds to spare. Hooper struck first in a pulsating clash when he beat the offside trap to latch onto a pass from Paul Hayes and slotted a low shot past the despairing dive of Neil Sullivan in the 19th minute but on loan stars Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Jordon Mutch put Rovers 2-1 up by the interval. Highly-rated Arsenal teenager Emmanuel-Thomas cleverly volleyed home after chasing a high through ball from defender Sam Hird in the 22nd minute. Rovers had more of the attacking play after that but were denied when they had a penalty appeal turned down after Andrew Wright appeared to handle when Emmanuel-Thomas burst through again. Emmanuel-Thomas had visiting keeper Joe Murphy at full stretch to save in the 44th minute before Rovers went ahead a minute later. Birmingham youngster Mutch was in the right place at the far post to meet a looping cross from Gareth Roberts before firing home in style. It was all Doncaster at the start of the second half but it was Scunthorpe who levelled the scores against the run of play in the 53rd minute. Martis missed a chance to clear the ball when Martyn Woolford headed through and Hayes cashed in with a cool finish from just inside the box. The goals continued to flow when Rovers hit back four minutes later to snatch the lead again. Emmanuel-Thomas sent James Hayter racing through and the Rovers striker dribbled past a couple of defenders before slotting the ball home. It set up a grand stand finish with Paul Heffernan missing a great chance to add a fourth for Doncaster in the 78th minute before Jonathan Forte hit the bar with a cracking long range effort. Hooper cashed in with his 20th goal of the season when Rovers failed to clear their lines in the 84th minute but Martis atoned for his previous error when he headed home the winner to give Rovers their first home win in five games.
