Match Report
A late Alex John-Baptiste own goal rescued a point for Coventry City against ten-man Blackpool following a 1-1 draw at the Ricoh Arena. Brett Ormerod received a straight red early in the second half for an elbow but team-mate Barry Bannan went on to put the Tangerines ahead. But a late Coventry surge resulted in a own goal after a Gary Deegan shot deflected off John-Baptiste and into the net. Coventry had only won once in six matches and wanted to get back to form against Blackpool, whose manager Ian Holloway watched the match from the stands in his last game of a touchline ban. And the Sky Blues came close to taking the lead in the first minute when Carl Baker played in Michael McIndoe, but the former Bristol City man put his shot straight into the legs of the oncoming keeper Paul Rachubka. Blackpool responded well to the near miss and a well-worked move resulted in a ball to Ormerod in the box but, as he went to pull the trigger, James McPake made a hard tackle to end the danger. Neither side managed to trouble the other for much of the half but the Sky Blues wasted another golden opportunity after Baker's 33rd minute through ball gave Leon Best a one-on-one chance down the left side of the area. However, the Republic of Ireland international's shot with the outside of his boot whizzed past Rachubka's near post. The Tangerines had hardly threatened in the first half but looked a totally different side after the restart. Gary Taylor-Fletcher was the first to test Keiren Westwood when he struck an excellent shot towards the top corner only for the keeper to produce and equally brilliant save. Bannan was next to go close. The midfielder was first to react after a Charlie Adam free-kick bounce loose and his shot bounced off the underside of the bar and clear. The pressure was mounting on Coventry but then veteran forward Ormerod lost his cool as Blackpool prepared to take a corner and he elbowed Aron Gunnarsson before receiving an instant red. However, the Sky Blues struggled to take advantage and Blackpool remained on top and they took the lead through a superb Bannan strike. The loanee controlled with his thigh, let the ball bounce and smashed a 25-yard shot in off the underside the bar. Coleman ordered his team forward and after forcing Blackpool back, Baker managed to beat two players before playing in Deegan whose shot hit John-Baptiste and looped over Rachubka and into the net.
