Match Report
Chelsea were in seventh heaven as a hat-trick by Salomon Kalou and a Frank Lampard brace led the Blues back to the top of the Premier League table thanks to a 7-0 thrashing of Stoke City at Stamford Bridge. City felt the full force of a Chelsea side who could conceivably win the title next weekend if Manchester United lose away to Sunderland. Stoke had nothing to offer and suffered the loss of their captain Abdoulaye Faye on nine minutes through injury. Chelsea had a fine chance to take the lead on 12 minutes, but first goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen parried a 20-yard drive from Lampard and then centre-back Robert Huth blocked the in-running Ashley Cole's follow-up. Sorensen produced a brilliant save on 20 minutes preventing a powerful Didier Drogba eight-yard header from going in with a wonderful left-sided save. But on 24 minutes Kalou put the Blues ahead. A fantastic behind the body take by Drogba from another excellent Florent Malouda ball to wide on the right saw the striker arrow in a perfect cross and Kalou ducked low from four yards out and headed into the Stoke net. Six minutes later and Chelsea breached the Stoke rearguard again. After excellent set-up play by Drogba and Lampard, Kalou popped up and sidefooted home from close range. Kalou collided with the goalkeeper Sorensen in scoring and the Dane was carried off, being replaced by Asmir Begovic. Three minutes from half-time and ex-Chelsea defender Huth pulled down Kalou in the penalty area. Up stepped Lampard and the England man confidently slotted home to his right - sending Begovic the wrong way in the process. Confident Kalou had the first chance of the second half on 52 minutes, but his mazy run to the edge of the box saw his curling shot just go over the crossbar. With 20 minutes to go, Kalou completed his hat-trick. Feeding off a fine pass from Lampard, the Ivory Coast hitman outpaced the Stoke defence. His first shot was parried back to him by Begovic, but he tucked home expertly with a left-footed sidefoot from six yards out. It was his last effort of the game as he was then replaced by Joe Cole. Malouda should have scored on 78 minutes when a quick counter-attack cut Stoke apart, but Begovic produced another fine diving save to thwart the French winger. On 82 minutes, Lampard produced the best goal of the rout with a fine piece of skill - clipping home a side-footed volley from six yards out from an excellent cross from substitute Sam Hutchinson. Sub Daniel Sturridge got in on the act with three minutes to go by rounding Begovic and slotting home for the sixth, with Malouda popping up a minute later to tap home the seventh.
Live Text Commentary
Full time

That's it, it's all over, the referee has blown the final whistle.

CHELSEA 7 - 0 STOKE: Joe Cole's ball across the face of goal is turned in by MALOUDA who will be thankful to have hit the target this time!

Goal!! Florent Malouda scores for Chelsea.

CHELSEA 6 - 0 STOKE: Drogba sets up STURRIDGE who rounds the keeper and nets his first Premiership goal for Chelsea.

Goal!! Daniel Sturridge scores for Chelsea.

One-sided would be an understatement in this game with Stoke mustering just one attempt on goal. Chelsea have not stopped yet either as they flood players forward for another Hutchinson cross.

The hosts have scored seven at home twice already this season and they could quite easily have equalled or even bettered that margin today.

CHELSEA 5 - 0 STOKE: Hutchinson picks out LAMPARD at the far post and he nets his 20th of the season with a technically superb volley.

Goal!! Chelsea have scored with Frank Lampard putting it in the back of the net.

Nicolas Anelka is replaced by Daniel Sturridge.

A wonderful Chelsea counter attack somehow results in a corner rather than a goal. Anelka and Drogba link together before setting up Malouda whose close range shot is magnificently turned around the post by Begovic.

Stoke fail to clear a Chelsea free-kick and the ball drops to Ballack who stabs a half volley over the bar.

Yellow Card

Robert Huth is booked for unsporting behaviour.

Chelsea are replacing Renato Paulo Ferreira with Sam Hutchinson.

Malouda puts in his contender for miss of the season as Anelka set him up a yard out of an open goal but he fails to make real contact with the ball.

Chelsea are replacing Salomon Kalou with Joe Cole.

CHELSEA 4 - 0 STOKE: KALOU completes his first Chelsea hat-trick as he prods home his initial rebounded effort.

Goal!! Salomon Kalou scores for Chelsea.

Anelka tries his luck from outside the box but his strike does not trouble Begovic who sees the ball wide.

Carlo Ancelotti is urging his side forward on the touchline. He will not allow them a moments rest and there are surely more goals left in this tie.

Chelsea are receiving plenty of joy from the right flank and this time it is Kalou who is in acres of space searching out Anelka or Drogba inside the box. In the end the cross is well defended by Stoke.

Yellow Card

Dean Whitehead is booked for unsporting behaviour.

Alex smashes a long range free-kick over the bar and into the stand behind the goal.

Yellow Card

Glenn Whelan goes into the referee's book for unsporting behaviour.

Dave Kitson makes way for Sanli Tuncay.

Sloppy defending from Alex as his misplaced pass puts the Chelsea defence under pressure, but it comes to an end when Delap's long range effort is blocked by Ivanovic.

Stoke waste another set-piece in the final third as Whelan's free-kick evades everyone in the box and runs out for a goal-kick.

Cole twists and turns inside the box and has options available but he tries to get a shot away from a tight angle and eventually runs into trouble.

Kalou goes in search of his first Chelsea hat-trick and hits a left-footed strike over the bar from the edge of the box.

Stoke move players forward for a free-kick in a dangerous position but Etherington curls the ball straight behind for a goal-kick with Fuller attacking the far post.

While Chelsea are in a comfortable position in this game Carlo Ancelotti will want more of the same from his side in this half as they look to increase their goal difference advantage over Manchester Untied.

Chelsea are playing with real confidence at the moment and Stoke just cannot cope with their slick passing moves.

There is a whopping seven minutes of added time at the end of the first-half following the injury to Sorensen, who has a suspected broken elbow.

CHELSEA 3 - 0 STOKE: LAMPARD sends Begovic the wrong way, slotting the spot kick into the bottom right corner.

Drogba tries to get his name on the scoresheet with an ambitious effort that he sends high and wide of the target.

Thomas Sorensen is replaced by Asmir Begovic.

The physio's indication is that it is not good news for Sorensen who is currently being helped onto a stretcher.

The Stoke players are questioning Steve Bennett's decision to allow the goal as Kalou slid in two footed to reach the loose ball. He also seems to have caught Sorensen who is now receiving treatment for an arm injury.

Goal!! Salomon Kalou scores for Chelsea.

Stoke are finding themselves under all sorts of pressure here and the hosts are in total control of this game.

Drogba bounds down on a long ball from Florent Malouda. He makes it before Sorensen and rounds the keeper before losing his composure and blasting the ball over the bar, albeit from a difficult angle.

The resulting corner causes all sorts of corner inside the box and Alex's cushioned header is flicked wide by the outside of Nicolas Anelka's boot.

Ferreira's cross is much better this time and Drogba's header forces a top drawer save out of Sorensen.

A well-worked short corner results in Kalou laying off Drogba on the edge of the box but he blazes his effort over the bar.

Paolo Ferreira moves forward down the right flank but his final ball into the box lands behind Didier Drogba who cannot get it under control.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have a grip on this game and are seeing plenty of the ball but are beginning to find life difficult with so many red and white shirts behind the ball.

Stoke have now been stretched at the back on more than one occasion and Cole really should have done better with that effort, though questions may have been raised as to whether he was stood in an offside position.

Lampard hits a trademark strike from distance and Thomas Sorensen can only palm it into the path of Ashley Cole who hits a low shot straight at the keeper from close range.

Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye is replaced by Ryan Shawcross.

Stoke skipper Abdoulaye Faye receives treatment on the field for an injury and it looks as though he will not be able to continue.
