Match Report
A second-half equaliser from striker David Nugent earned Burnley a point from a 1-1 draw with Stoke City but the home side will regard the result as a missed opportunity to move away from the bottom three. The Burnley ground-staff tried their best to pull a flanker on the famous Rory Delap long throw by placing advertisement hoardings near to the touchline but it was all to no avail as the Potters took the lead thanks to an inevitable long throw which was headed home by Turkey international Tuncay. Chances were very limited in the opening half with Burnley's best efforts a shot from left-back Danny Fox which goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen pushed behind for corner and a chance for striker Martin Paterson who should have done better than find the side-netting after good work from Chris Eagles. Burnley manager Brian Laws introduced young midfielder Kevin McDonald at the start of the second half and it was the Scotland Under-21 international who helped the home side regain a footing in the match with an intelligent display that got his side moving forward at every possible opportunity. Burnley got their equaliser when Paterson was able to pick out the head of Nugent and the on-loan Portsmouth attacker placed his header beyond the helpless Sorensen. Lively winger Eagles had an opportunity to give the home side all three points but spooned his effort over the crossbar after some good approach play involving Paterson, Tyrone Mears and substitute Wade Elliott. McDonald then went close for the home side but placed his effort narrowly wide of the upright. At the other end winger Matthew Etherington could have snatched it for Stoke but curled his attempt over the crossbar. The result doesn't really help Burnley in their fight against relegation with the Clarets still needing a probably four victories from their remaining nine games to give them any hope of survival in their first season of Premier League football.
