Match Report
Iain Dowie's pre-match called for a big response to lift Hull City out of the doldrums fell on deaf ears as the toothless Tigers had to battle to a goalless draw against Birmingham City at St Andrew's. In the light of the heavy defeats suffered by both teams in their previous games a goalless encounter was always on the cards. Following their impressive early season unbeaten run, which took them into the top ten, Birmingham have gone off the boil and have now failed to win any of their last seven games. The only consolation for Birmingham was that they managed to keep a blank goalsheet for the first time in nine games. Surprisingly they failed to dominate a struggling Hull side who went into the game having lost seven of their previous eight games and there was little conviction about their play. Hull were assisted by Birmingham's lack of firepower, which was surprising against a side seemingly doomed for relegation. An inconsistent James McFadden was only just off the mark for Birmingham with a long-range effort, but Hull were able to hold their own without showing any goal potential. Their best opportunity of creating an upset occurred when George Boateng produced a fast, low cross which was just missed by Kevin Kilbane. Matt Duke, who took over from Boaz Myhill following the mauling against Burnley, justified his inclusion when he produced a fine diving save from Lee Bowyer. Not to be outdone Joe Hart, who is expected to be in England's World Cup squad, marked his return to Birmingham's side following the 5-1 defeat at Manchester City, made a reflex save to keep out a header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Jimmy Bullard attempted to lift Hull in the second period but the match still struggled to come to life. It was significant that Birmingham sent on Phillips in the hope the veteran striker could produce one of his goalscoring performances. Birmingham boss, Alex McLeish, then took off Keith Fahey and replaced him with Seb Larsson in an attempt to give his side a better attacking formation. But it was to no avail as the game drifted to its ultimate stalemate to the frustration of the fans despite a last minute stinging shot from Hull's Craig Fagan.
Live Text Commentary
Full time

Birmingham 0 Hull 0: It was a pretty dire scrap between two out of form teams. Hull pick up a point in their bid for survival, but a little more adventure and they may have got more.

90

Half chance for Hull as the ball breaks to Fagan on the volley from the edge of the area. He hits it well but it goes about a yard wide.

89

There will be three minutes of added time at the end of what has been a largely forgettable match.

88

Cairney gets forward well. He curls an effort goalwards. Hart dives to his right but it just doesn't have the necessary bend on it and the ball goes wide.

87

You really have to wonder why Iain Dowie hasn't tried more to changes things here and go for the win. Three points could have been here for the taking but we've seen just one straight switch in attack from the Hull manager.

85

Bullard runs at the Birmingham defence. He gets inside the area and shoots low, but Hart is equal to it and makes the save. It's one of the better pieces of action in this match.

83

Mouyokolo heads at goal. It's deflected and Joe Hart pounces on it.

80

Jerome latches on to a long ball. He tussles with McShane and shoots from the edge of the area, but it deflects wide for a corner.

79

Hull are still going with just one in attack here and you have to wonder if Iain Dowie is happy to settle for a point here or if he'll try to push his team forward in search for a win late on.

78

Bullard turns and shoots left-footed from distance. He gets right underneath this effort and it ends up half-way up the stand behind the goal. It's another really ambitious effort from the Hull midfielder.

77

Sonko takes a knock on the side of the head and he needs to go off and get some treatment on the sidelines.

75

Bullard plays a free-kick into the Birmingham area. Dann half clears, then Jerome smashes the ball clear for the hosts.

74
Substitution

Hull City substitution: Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is replaced by Jozy Altidore.

72

Free-kick to Birmingham. Larsson delivers it into the penalty area, but Sonko clears.

70

This has been a really poor football match so far. Kevin Phillips does have an effort at goal, but it's deflected away for a corner.

68

Diagonal ball forward aims for Fagan, but Ridgewell does well to clear.

67

Gardner plays a left-footed ball into the area. The ball loops up and Duke comes out to claim, but he's fouled by Jerome and Hull earn a free-kick much to the disgust of the Birmingham faithful.

66

Ridgewell gets space on the left and crosses into the Hull area, but it drfits over everyone in the centre.

65

It's been a pretty poor spectacle in the first three-quarters of this match. We'll be heading comfortably towards a 0-0 result here if nothing changes.

62
Substitution

Birmingham substitution: Sebastian Larsson comes on in place of Fahey.

60

Left-footed shot from Cairney from outside the area, but he gets underneath the ball and it goes well high and wide.

58
Substitution

Birmingham substitution: Kevin Phillips comes on in the first change of the afternoon and he replaces James McFadden.

56

You might be forgiven for thinking that this was an end of season game taking place between two mid-table sides. Whilst Birmingham don't need to win this, Hull really need the points and just aren't doing enough to force the issue.

55

Dann plays a ball forward but the ball is intercepted and Hull clear.

53

McFadden makes space for a cross on the right, but Duke claims comfortably.

52

It's been a more positive start to the half for Hull, but they're still not looking like causing Birmingham a huge amount of problems.

50

Fagan runs at the Birmingham defence. He plays it forward for Vennegoor of Hesselink, but Johnson reads the danger well and comes across to clear for a throw-in.

49

Dawson crosses high to the far post towards Fagan, but it's too high for the Hull striker.

48

Hull earn the first corner of the half. Bullard slips as he takes. The ball is cleared as far as Boateng on the edge of the area, but his first-time effort on the volley goes well over.

47

Jerome bursts forward into the Hull area. He works space on his left foot for a shot, but Duke saves.

Second half

The second half is now underway.

Half time

Birmingham 0 Hull 0: It's been a bit of a scrappy first half at St Andrews. Birmingham have probably shaded it, but we've seen limited goalmouth action. One save apiece from Hart and Duke, but few clear-cut chances.

45

Ridgewell earns a corner for the hosts. They've had quite a number in this first half, but not done anything with them so far.

45

There will be two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

44

Fagan crosses into the box. Vennegoor of Hesselink got up ahead of Johnson to head goalwards, but he can't get any purchase on the header and it bounces down easily for Hart.

42

Jerome lays the ball off for Fahey to shoot from the edge of the area, but it's a tame effort and Duke saves.

40

Fagan does well down the left. Dawson smashes the ball into the box and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink heads goalwards and forces a good save from Joe Hart.

39

Chance for Bowyer. Birmingham play a long ball forward. The ball is flicked on and Bowyer shoots from 12 yards, but Duke gets down well to his right to make the save.

38

We've seen little in the way of goalmouth action in the last few minutes. The best attack has been a 30-yard effort from Bullard, which is well off target.

35

The home side are certainly starting to look the more dangerous, but still neither keeper has been fully tested.

33

Gardner crosses from the right for Fahey to head back. Johnson shoots, but his shot is deflected and it ends with Bowyer heading onto the roof of the net.

32

Birmingham break forward into the Hull area again. Fahey finds himself with a chance to shoot. He takes a touch before shooting from 10 yards and it deflects wide for a corner.

30

McFadden shoots left-footed after good work from Jerome and Bowyer. The effort is deflected and Jerome is happy to shepherd the ball away for a corner.

29

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink plays the ball to Kilbane. He crosses towards Fagan, but Ridgewell does well to clear.

28

Bullard drives forward, going past a couple of Birmingham defenders before shooting, but his effort is deflected away and Birmingham clear.

27

This game has just dropped a little in tempo over the past few minutes. Neither keeper has been hugely troubled in this opening 27 minutes.

24

Barry Ferguson tries his luck at goal with an overhead kick, but it's way off target and stays in play.

22

Bullard breaks forward for Hull and shoots from 25 yards. He rather scuffs the effort though and despite a tricky bounce in front of Hart, it's straight at the Birmingham keeper and he collects comfortably.

21

The corner is flicked on at the near post by Ridgewell, but Hull clear.

20

Good cross from Gardner. Duke couldn't get to the cross and McShane just manages to turn the ball behind for a corner.

19

McFadden gets past Kilbane and crosses from the right. Fahey heads back across goal but Bowyer loses his footing as he tries to get on the end of the pull back.

16

Hull are starting to slowly get into this game. It's important for the visitors to win this game so you couldn't see them sitting behind the ball looking for a point.

15

Boateng drives into the penalty area down the right. He drives the ball across the face of goal and Kilbane just can't get on the end of it.

14

Long throw-in into the Birmingham penalty area again. This time it's Lee Bowyer who clears for the hosts.

13

Gardner takes the free-kick into the Hull area. Dann gets his head on it, but his glancing effort goes just wide.

12

Mouyokolo comes forward with the ball but loses possession. Birmingham break in behind him and earn a free-kick 35 yards out.

10

Dawson hits a long ball forward, but Dann heads clear. Hull takes another long throw towards the Birmingham area, but the ball is cleared again.

7

Good move again from Birmingham who have started the brighter of the two sides. Gardner puts a low ball into the penalty area but Hull clear again. Fagan tries to break at the other end, but is dispossessed.

5

Johnson is still down requiring some treatment from the Birmingam physio.

4

Roger Johnson goes down on the edge of the Hull area. McFadden plays on and shoots, but it goes over. Johnson will require some treatment here.

4

First corner of the match and Gardner wins it for the home side. McFadden puts the ball in towards the back post. The ball is headed back across goal and Hull just about clear.

3

It's been a tentative start to the game from both sides. Hull in particular cannot afford to lose this match.

2

Early long throw-in into the Blues penalty area, but Birmingham clear.
