Match Report
Inter Milan secured Europe's top prize for the first time in 45 years thanks to Diego Milito's brace as Jose Mourinho's side beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in an absorbing Champions League final in Madrid. The result means that Mourinho, who seems certain to take up the managerial reins at Real Madrid in the summer, finishes his stint in Italy with a treble following his side's domestic league and cup double. It means that Inter have emulated Barcelona's treble success of last season and they deserved their victory in Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium. Inter saw off the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona to reach the final and finally claimed the European Cup for the third time in their history following the successes of 1964 and 1965. Bayern had won the trophy four times with three successes between 1974 and 1976 and another nine years ago, but they never looked like making it a fifth victory even though they had seen off Manchester United and Lyon earlier in the competition. Mourinho chose Chistian Chivu to replace suspended midfielder Thiago Motta while Javier Zanetti made his 700th appearance for Inter. Bayern started with Thomas Muller partnering Ivica Olic in attack while Hamit Altintop got the nod in midfield in place of the suspended Franck Ribery. After Inter had edged the opening stages, Arjen Robben burst to the byline in the tenth minute but Olic was unable to guide his shot on target. Seven minutes later Maicon's arm appeared to be raised as a corner was whipped in, but referee Howard Webb missed the alleged handball and play carried on. In the 23rd minute Olic bundled his way to the edge of the area but, when the ball broke to Robben, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid star clipped his shot way over the bar. Inter took the lead in the 34th minute. Milito got his head to Julio Cesar's long goal kick and, after Wesley Sneijder had laid the ball back to the Argentinian, he coolly lifted the ball over Hans-Jorg Butt and into the back of the net for a simple but superbly executed goal. Two minutes before half-time it should have been 2-0 when Milito set up Sneijder who stormed into the area only to fire his left-foot shot straight at Butt. Bayern made a great start to the second half and almost grabbed an immediate equaliser when Altintop set up Thomas Muller whose shot hit Julio Cesar's legs when the Bayern man should really have scored. Almost immediately Butt had to tip Goran Pandev's shot away for a corner as the lively start to the second 45 minutes continued. Bayern continued to press with Robben always a menace but Julio Cesar was equal to the Dutchman's curling effort while Muller had his goalbound shot headed away by Esteban Cambiasso. Inter continued to soak up all the Bayern pressure and were content to hit the Germans on the counter-attack and the plan worked as, in the 70th minute, Milito got the ball 45 yards from goal, took on and beat two Bayern defenders, before sliding his right-foot shot past Butt. In the final analysis Muller was a willing worker but missed his two good chances while Milito took both his and that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Full Time: BAYERN MUNICH 0-2 INTER MILAN.

90
Substitution

With just a few seconds left Milito is given a standing ovation by the Inter fans as he is replaced by Marco Materazzi.

88

Muller has been a willing worker but he missed his two chances while Milito took both his. That's been the difference between the two teams.

86

It's game over as Bayern continue to attack without any real belief.

84

Robben's free-kick goes straight into the Inter wall as the seconds tick by.

83

It seems strange to think that such a European powerhouse as Inter have not won this competition since 1965.

82

If any side can close out a game from this position it's Inter.

80

Eto'o and Maicon combine well as Inter search for a third goal.

79
Substitution

Another change by Inter as Pandev makes way for Sulley Muntari.

78
Yellow Card

Van Bommel's fierce challenge on Milito earns him a yellow card.

76

Bayern are attacking again but you sense the more likely scorers of the next goal are still Inter on the counter-attack.

74
Substitution

Bayern bring on Mario Gomez for Olic.

74

Bayern start to press again but surely Inter won't concede two goals now.

72

It's tough on Bayern but Milito has been the difference tonight, he's been deadly.

70
Goal

BAYERN MUNICH 0-2 INTER MILAN. It's that man MILITO again. The ball comes to him 40 yards from goal, but he takes on and beats two Bayern defenders before sliding his right-foot shot past Butt.

70

Inter's defending has been much more solid after a few nervous moments at the start of this half.

70

Inter continue to soak up all the Bayern pressure and remain content to hit the Germans on the counter-attack.

68
Substitution

Chivu makes way for Dejan Stankovic as Mourinho makes his first change.

66

Play swings to the other end and Julio Cesar is equal to Robben's teasing, curling effort.

65

Sneijder tries his luck from distance again, but Butt gets down to make a comfortable save.

64

Robben's free-kick finds its way to Muller whose shot is blocked. Bayern are pressing hard for a goal now though.

63
Substitution

Hamit Altintop makes way for Miroslav Klose.

63

Robben wins another free-kick in a dangerous position, Pandev the offender this time.

62

Olic continues to be a lively presence for Bayern who continue to dominate possession.

61

Inter are of course the master defenders but they've made some uncharacteristic errors already since the interval.

59

Robben and Philipp Lahm combine well down the right as Bayern win two corners in quick succession. They both come to nothing though.

57

Bayern aren't beaten yet though as they search for an equaliser.

55

Altintop drags a shot wide as Inter dither in defence.

54

Sneijder's effort is poor though as the ball sales harmlessly over the bar.

53

Pandev wins a free-kick on the edge of Bayern's penalty area after tumbling under Mark van Bommel's clumsy challenge.

52

Bayern look to feed Robben, who is hugging the right touchline, at every opportunity.

50

Robben has two Inter defenders on him every time he gets the ball now.

48

Butt tips Goran Pandev's shot away for a corner as the lively start to the second 45 minutes continues.

47

Bayern have started the second half superbly as they find holes in the previously watertight Inter defence seemingly at will.

46

Bayern almost equalise inside the first few seconds of the second half as Altintop sets up Muller whose shot hits Julio Cesar's legs when the Bayern man should really have scored.

Second half

Bayern get the second period underway, no changes by either coach at the interval.

Half time

Half Time: BAYERN MUNICH 0-1 INTER MILAN.

44

Samuel Eto'o, who has been anonymous in the first half, pops up at right-back to stop another patient Bayern move.

43

It should be 2-0 as Milito sets up Sneijder who storms into the area but his left-foot shot is straight at Butt who keeps it out.

42

Robben gets some power into his ambitious shot but it's off-target.

41

Bayern try to respond but Hamit Altintop's weak effort is easily gathered by Julio Cesar.

40

Bayern could do with the half-time whistle now, they appear to be a little shell-shocked after Milito's goal.

39

The goal has lifted Inter but Sneijder wastes a free-kick opportunity, a rare piece of poor play by the Dutchman.

38

Bayern will feel a little aggrieved to be behind, but Milito's finish was worthy of the occasion.

36

It was a simple but superbly executed goal and Mourinho is on target to sign off at Inter with a superb treble.

34
Goal

BAYERN MUNICH 0-1 INTER MILAN. The goal arrives on schedule. MILITO gets his head to Julio Cesar's long goal kick, Sneijder gives the ball back to the Argentinian who coolly lifts the ball over Butt and into the back of the net.

33

Milito gets to the byline but his cross is too deep and no Inter player can get an effort on target.

31

It's getting to the point where the game needs a goal to liven it up.

29
Yellow Card

Inter have definitely identified Robben as Bayern's dangerman. He gets past Cristian Chivu who hauls him back and is handed the second yellow card of the evening.

28

Inter seem happy to sit back and soak up all the pressure.

27

Butt is forced to make another routine save from Sneijder's long-range effort.

26
Yellow Card

Martin Demichelis becomes the first player to go into the referee's notebook.

25

Bayern are dominating possession but are more than happy to go sideways and backwards for long spells as they probe for an opening.

23

Olic bundles his way to the edge of the area but, when the ball breaks to Robben, he clips the ball way over the bar.

22

Both sets of players take a breather as the pace of the match slackens for the first time.

21

It's already looking as though one goal will settle the game, although to be fair it has been a high-quality match so far.

19

A very ambitious Wesley Sneijder lashes in a 40-yard free-kick that takes a deflection and forces Butt to make a smart stop.

17

Maicon's arm appears to be raised as a corner is whipped in but Webb misses the handball and play carries on. It would have been harsh to penalise the Inter player but I've seen them given.

16

Robben stays on his feet this time and wins a free-kick, just to show that histrionics don't always pay.

15

Bayern are playing the better football and certainly don't seem top be over-awed.

14

Robben's writhing around in agony again but Howard Webb is unimpressed and the Dutchman is soon back on his feet.

12

Maicon tries his luck from distance but it's a poor low effort that flies well wide of Hans-Jorg Butt's goal.

10

Great burst by Robben who gets to the byline but Olic is unable to guide his shot on target.

9

Both defences look very tight and well-organised, as you'd expect but the two attacks are probing intelligently as well.

8

Olic is causing Lucio a few problems down the left as Bayern continue to give as good as they get.

6

So far so good. It's not been a cautious opening by either side at all.

5

Milito slips at the crucial time as Inter launch an incisive counter-attack.

4

Bayern build an impressive move down the left but Inter defend it well.

3

Arjen Robben is sent tumbling by Walter Samuel but Mourinho is unimpressed by the Dutchman's theatrics.

2

It's Inter that are setting the early pace. They are camped in the Bayern half in the opening stages.

1

Bayern look a bit like Atletico Madrid in their red and white vertical striped shirts.
