Liverpool midfielder Boudewijn Zenden will be out for just over a month due to a knee injury.
The 30-year-old Netherlands international requires surgery on a ligament problem, adding to the Reds' midfield woes.
Boss Rafa Benitez told the club's official website: "It's a big blow for us to lose Bolo. He is a big help to all the players here because he mixes very well.
"Steven Gerrard is now our only fit central midfielder and so there's no debate about where he's going to play.
"We have a number of options when deciding who can play alongside him.
"Jamie Carragher can play there, Sami Hyypia can play there because he has a lot of agility and very good stamina and I've also been talking to Daniel Agger."
Meanwhile, the Reds have wrapped up an 18-month loan deal with Boca Juniors for highly-rated left-back Emiliano Insua.
The 17-year-old will link up with Liverpool in the January transfer window, with a permanent deal in the pipeline.
Benitez added: "He is a good, young player with a lot of potential. He will come to us in January and we'll start to assess him at Melwood."
