Mansfield Town are considering signing Matt Piper after the former Sunderland winger joined the Stags in a bid to prove his fitness.
The 25-year-old ex-Leicester City wideman suffered a horrendous run of injuries during four years at Sunderland.
He made just 15 appearances for the Black Cats prior to his release last January but is hoping to resurrect his career with the Stags.
"Matty has had five operations on his knee in the last year and rang me to ask if he could come in and train with us," said Town boss Billy Dearden.
"He seems to think he can still play league football and if he is anything like he was before he would be a big bonus to us."
Meanwhile, former Crewe midfielder Lee Bell is also training with the League Two club in a bid to win a contract.
