Mansfield Town boss Peter Shirtliff is confident that captain Richie Barker will still be at the club next season, with a new contract on the table.

The 31-year-old still has another 12 months of his current deal to run, but Shirtliff is keen to agree an extension with Barker, who scored 23 goals for the Stags in the season just ended.

He told PA Sport: "We have offered him an extension. He's happy here and he likes it here so I'm hopeful he will stay.

"I like Richie, he's the club captain and he scored 23 goals in all competitions last season. If we can get another like him we should be in the top six next season."

Meanwhile, Shirtliff has also confirmed that he is keen to try and sign former Rotherham United midfielder Andy Monkhouse.

However, he admitted: "We did enquire about Andy but at the moment he is speaking to other clubs."
