Welbeck extends United deal
11 Dec 2009 - 12:27:05
Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has signed a new contract to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2013.
The 19-year-old frontman is seen as one of the brightest prospects at United, having netted five goals in 20 first-team appearances to date.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "We are delighted. We see Danny as one of the great young players who has emerged from the academy.
"He will have a terrific career and we are glad that he has placed his trust in us with his future."
Welbeck himself added: "I am really happy, there was never a doubt that this is where I want to be.
"I am enjoying every minute and learning so much from all the great players that are here. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the club and the fans for all their support."
Meanwhile, Ferguson has dismissed rumours linking England goalkeeper Ben Foster with a loan move away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window.
"Nothing is going to happen with Ben. He is here and this is where he stays," Ferguson told reporters.
Foster has struggled for first-team action with United this season, with Tomasz Kuszczak currently standing in for veteran Edwin van der Sar, who is recovering from a knee injury.
