Wayne Rooney calls for Premier League winter break to keep players fresh for England

Wayne Rooney has called for the introduction of a Premier League winter break to give the England national team the best possible chance of success in future major tournaments. The Premier League have so far resisted calls to bring in a break, which is a feature of the Spanish, Italian, French and German domestic calendars. The lack of a mid-season hiatus has been cited as a reason for England's failure to reach the final four of any major tournament since the 1990 World Cup, and Rooney believes it is time for it to become part of the English season. Out of puff: Wayne Rooney says end of season games can lack intensity Quoted in the Sunday Express, he said: 'A winter break would not only help the England team but the Premier League as well. 'Towards the end of the season the intensity in some of the games which is normally there is missing. It's a long season with the intensity the games are played at. It is only fair on players that there is a break.' Rooney believes a break is especially important in England because of the pace of the game. 'It's great, especially as a forward when the game is end to end and the game opens up. But it's only in England where you see the game that quick,' he added.   Rooney doesn't scare us: Montenegro stand firm in face of threat of strikerRio has 90 minutes to prove to Capello that he's fit to be England captainKenny Dalglish: Wilshere is good enough and old enough for EnglandPatrick Collins: Football is condoning thuggery at its peril  Explore more:People: Wayne Rooney Places: United Kingdom
