Vidic lost for words after being named double Manchester United player of the year
Published: 18 May 2009 - 10:38:38
Nemanja Vidic was literally speechless after scooping both Manchester United's player of the year awards last night. Ryan Giggs may have scooped the PFA award, but his Old Trafford team-mates voted Vidic their top star, as did the fans. But the towering centre half was clearly not expecting the honours. Having seemingly not prepared any words for the occasion, he said: 'It's a great night. It has been a really good year. I am surprised I got it but I have really enjoyed it. 'To be honest I don't have so many individual awards. That's why I am a bit confused and my speech is not the best. Next time my speech will be a bit better.' Carlos Tevez was a notable absentee at the awards dinner, a further indication that his career at Old Trafford is coming to an end. Vidic, a key figure at the back in United's Barclays Premier League triumph and their run to the Champions League final, has also made his presence felt at the other end of the field, scoring some crucial goals. Ryan Giggs said: 'Consistently throughout the season he's been brilliant.' Cristiano Ronaldo took the goal of the year award for his 40-yard strike away to Porto in the Champions League.
