Vidic doubt for title decider
24 Apr 2008 - 07:23:43
Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is a major doubt for Saturday's Premier League title showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Serbia international missed Wednesday's goalless Champions League semi-final first leg draw with Barcelona after receiving hospital treatment for a stomach illness.
Speaking after the game, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he doesn't expect the tenacious centre-half to be fit to face Chelsea.
United are currently three points clear of the Blues at the top of the table and victory would virtually guarantee them a second successive Premier League title.
"Yesterday before training he had very severe stomach pains, so we sent him off to a hospital," said Ferguson.
"We felt that was the best place for him to go. He was kept in until late at night and then they let him go.
"Let's hope we can get him there on Saturday morning - we've only got 72 hours to do that, but he'll want to have a go.
"He'll be desperate to play and if we do get him, it'll be a bonus to us."
Wes Brown will once again partner Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the defence should Vidic fail to recover in time.
