Van der Sar returns to action
07 Oct 2009 - 08:04:03
Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is set to return to first-team action after making his comeback in the reserves on Tuesday.
The 38-year-old Dutchman played the full 90 minutes of United's 1-0 victory over Everton.
Van der Sar has not made a competitive appearance for the Red Devils this term after breaking two bones in his left hand during a pre-season encounter with Bayern Munich at the beginning of August.
The former Juventus and Fulham keeper was rarely troubled during the match but showed no signs of his hand problem afterwards.
He will now compete with Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak for the number one jersey at Old Trafford in the coming weeks.
Foster has mainly deputised for the veteran keeper, but the England international has struggled to prove that he deserves to remain first-choice following a string of high-profile mistakes.
United's next game is a Premier League encounter against Bolton Wanderers on October 17.
