Manchester United have held talks with Cristiano Ronaldo over the treatment of an ankle injury which could see him miss the start of the new season.
The 23-year-old Portugal ace suffered problems with his right ankle during Euro 2008, while most of the talk surrounded a possible world record transfer to Real Madrid.
However, Ronaldo could yet be forced to undergo surgery to correct the problem, with United waiting on advice from a specialist.
A statement from the Old Trafford club confirmed: "Manchester United's medical staff met with the medical team from the Portuguese FA and Cristiano Ronaldo in Lisbon regarding the ongoing treatment of his injured right ankle.
"As a result, further specialist advice is being sought and an announcement will be made on any action in due course."
Ronaldo admitted straight after Portugal's exit from the European Championships that he had been struggling with the injury for some time.
However, his long-term future at Old Trafford still remains shrouded in doubt, with Ronaldo having given strong hints that he wants to head to the Bernabeu to join Real.
