    United sweat on Rio verdict

    30 Apr 2009 - 08:43:59

Manchester United are hopeful that the rib injury sustained by Rio Ferdinand during the Champions League win over Arsenal is not too serious.

The England central defender had to be replaced shortly before the end of the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, having been clattered by team-mate Edwin van der Sar as the goalkeeper came to deal with a cross.

Ferdinand was sent to hospital for scans straight after the game, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson commenting: "He's got a crack on the ribs.

"It's just precautionary, we hope there's nothing broken. We'll have to wait and see."

However, Ferguson is already planning the team for Saturday's Premier League clash with Middlesbrough without one of his key performers.

He added: "I do not think it is right that we have a lunchtime kick-off at Middlesbrough. Obviously I will bring some freshness into the team.

"The defence will be the same, apart from Rio, but the midfield and forwards could change completely."
