Manchester United have rejected an offer from
Newcastle United to sign contract rebel defender Wes Brown.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at Old trafford in the summer and has rejected the opportunity to extend his deal with the Premier League champions.
Last month, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson warned the England defender that no fresh terms would be offered and that he would be willing to lose him on a free transfer during the summer.
However, Ferguson has revealed he has turned down an approach from the Magpies for the versatile defender.
Brown has made 26 appearances this season in the absence of regular right-back Gary Neville.
"There was an enquiry from Newcastle about Wes and we turned it down," Ferguson told the club's official website.
"The matter rests with Wes and his agent. We'll just wait and see what happens. Our offer is still there - it's now up to Wes."
The Salford-born defender has made over 250 appearances for the Red Devils during a decade in the first team.
