United move for Leighton Baines, as Kenwright seethes!

It’s probably the least surprising transfer move of the summer, but that makes little difference to the temperament of Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright. As news emerged of a Manchester United – now bossed by former Everton manager David Moyes – approach for Toffees full back Leighton Baines, The Daily star reported that Kenwright was “seething.”

At this stage, it’s unclear whether there was any understanding between the Kenwright and Moyes as to the appropriateness, or otherwise, of any United move for an Everton player after the manager decamped to Old Trafford, but if the newspaper’s report is anything like accurate, it seems that the move was not something that Kenwright expected.

With Pattrice Evra apparently in decline and likely to move on, possibly to Monaco, this summer, a new left back was a key requirement for Manchester United. Baines had already been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the past couple of years, so when David Moyes landed there after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, it seemed a natural match. Everton apparently do not see it that way however, and the next few weeks will be interesting as the supposed close relationship between Kenwright and Moyes, may well become strained to breaking point.
